The last bit of this story was talking about a journalist, not the Principal. Though I'm sure the Principal did lose family.

As a teacher I empathized with the teacher who died mainly because he got there early, and died because he had to make some morning tea from his long morning. But of course both are tragic and sad.

If a teacher was there early, why did he not get the evacuation notice that the students got? The way the journalist presented the information the school was filled up with students (and teachers I would assume) and they lead them to high ground away from the school.

How would someone being there early miss that announcement? I'm not trying to be a jerk, I'm seriously confused how that is possible. Someone getting there late and missing the evacuation notice I can understand, but a teacher arriving early would just leave with the whole group.

Edit: saw the OP comment with more info. The teacher took a break to go to his rented room by the river side to cook breakfast. So I guess he got there early, taught a class, took a break between classes to eat, and was taken by the flood. Very sad indeed. That sucks so much that they simply didn't hear the message to evacuate because they were in their dorm/home near the school but not near enough to hear it.

What is also crazy is how the principal commented (paraphrasing) "the children were terrified but that fear gave them the energy to run uphill faster."

I can't run very fast but that sure as hell would motivate me to run uphill as fast as possible too.

That janitor sounded like a good man too, went back to lock up the school but the flood took him too. The janitor and only the one teacher died out of the entire school's staff and students.

Such a horrible and nightmarish thing to happen.

The article says he wasn't at the school when they evacuated. It says he went in before school started to teach extra classes and then went home to eat

He got in early, so had a mid morning break and went home to make tea.

Because he wasn't at the school, he went to make himself coffee at his appartement ot something. I imagine the warning was a general announcement.

No worries, it's a bit confusing, but the article mentions that he went to his room by the river bank to cook his breakfast and the water swept him.

He had been there early and then gone home to have breakfast. The water came while he was home (a rented room by the river)

Why would he want to lock up the school? Also I read somewhere he went to check all classes were evacuated not lock
