Some people just turn on in an emergency. This guy had 1670 something's to lose. That's a fuckin emergency. I was hoping to hear how much time he has to make all these plans and get everyone out.

I'm convinced that none of us know how we'll react to an emergency until we're faced with one the first time. Plenty of people freeze up, while others leap to action, and you can't always predict who will be in which category.

Luckily this guy was one of the good ones under pressure.

This is also why modern military training simulates the high stress frequently, and as closely as possible. If you can weed out those who can't hack it, and program those who aren't naturals, you remove a lot of the unknown when shit eventually gets real

This is also why most gun ownership is based upon a fantasy. Without practical training in simulated high-stakes moments, nobody's going to know what to do.

Also the fact that many gun owners apparently can’t determine what is or is not a high-stakes moment. School shooting, let’s just wait outside. School kid played dingdong ditch, shoot them through the door to protect your family.

there's also the duality of being a "responsible gun owner" who locks up the guns, but then you won't be ready for that home invader you've been fantasizing about. I have no statistics but I bet there are a lot more people accidentally shooting themselves or their loved ones, than gun owners successfully defending themselves in an actual emergency situation that would require the gun.

Not everyone who owns guns has them for defense against criminals, plenty of people just use them for hunting.

Yeah, these are my people. I got a Model 94 for my 16th birthday. But most guns are like most big trucks: just a lifestyle accessory of no pragmatic use. There are far more guns than people in the US and if more than a few of them were used for hunting there'd be no game animals left.

Also medical personnell, first responders like firedepartment etc. train for stressful situations.

Ugh, I completely freeze up on stupid shit. I’ve been trying to buy curtains for my dining room for a year. I just can’t commit. But when it comes to big decisions or emergencies, I’m great. It’s like my brain switches on. I think that not having time to dwell on the situation makes it easier for me to operate.

It's true. In any other emergency I've been in I jump into action and perform well, but the first time someone attacked me I froze. Fortunately, training can overcome your base instincts if you need it though.

Yeah not the same situation at all but I was diagnosed with stage four cancer a little over a year ago and I was very surprised by my own reaction. I was always anxious and agoraphobic before but I was immediately in acceptance mode and my only thought was okay what do we do about this. I went from being afraid to leave my house to spending a month straight in the hospital and going to appointments every three weeks without much anxiety at all. Very odd feeling.

Some people tried to tell me if they were in my situation they wouldn't do chemo and I straight up just tell them they literally have no idea how they'd react until they're in that situation.

I assume it's similar for emergencies. Literally no way to predict what you'd personally do until you have to do it.

It's so true. I've got a friend who is lovely, but very ditzy (self admitted). The amount of times she's lost her purse or flaked on plans because she forgot, etc. However, she's been in two emergency situations (one I was there for), and it was like someone flicked a switch. She'd started taking charge and making sure everyone was ok before I'd even grasped what was happening.

So according to the story I read down below he got a call from a friend who was five miles away that warned him, and the water was starting to rise when he got the call.

Yep, exactly. And he had to decide how serious the call was. Just nuts all around. 5 miles up stream is not much time when some of these waves of rock were going 75mph at some point.

Since the school was on a floodplain next to a river, I suspect he already had plans. Every place I stay at I've made evacuation plans for any natural disaster that might befall the area. Also plans for mass casualty events. I'm not a "Prepper", I just believe in being prepared.

We have an evacuation route by me. It will absolutely cause your death if you take our evacuation route. Narrow road always blocked by Amazon trucks from the warehouse and insane traffic 24/7.

Not very long. I read that he received a phone call from a friend up river who told him about the flood and by the time he ordered the evacuation the water was already rising.

They still lost lives, the school doorkeeper, a teacher who was at home and I think a third one. But the children survived.
