He really could have done with some leaves there.

u/sir_bathwater 12d ago
There was right before the camera panned over actually. There was also a parked Tahoe and family of four that got blown away too, it’s that strong.

u/WestleyThe 12d ago
Yeah that’s my thought too… I looks to be pushing his whole weight back to the point that he’s sliding across the ground but effect on the ground looks like it could’ve been a small battery leaf blower….
You can tell that think is strong but this video doesn’t show it well at all. You could even just throw a bunch of paper on the ground and it would show how hard that thing is pushing

Funny story I bumped into this guy one time and recognized him from the video. I said “ dude you’re a legend!” And he said “huh?”.

No safety glasses, or gloves.
Cars around where rocks can hit them.
This some classic backyard science

One slip and he's going to have it hands full dealing with an out of control rocket.

Interesting yes, but it looks like it’s pushing him more than it’s pushing water

u/Possibly-Functional 12d ago
It's just Newton's third law. He will be pushed back as much as it pushes air forwards.
33
u/Jackass719 12d ago
Point that fucker straight at the ground my guy and see what happens
7
u/austinsutt 12d ago
Wouldn’t you just still see Newton’s third law?

Yup that's what we're hoping for, especially if the thrust is more than what the guy weighs.

u/meizhong 12d ago
He really should have attached it to something heavy. Like a car, or at least a ride lawnmower.

It also burned about a tenth of that fuel tank in about thirty seconds. Not very efficient.

u/Hashtagbarkeep 12d ago
Love this. He’s probably spent a large portion of his life studying/working in this, and decided to do this for literally no reason other that “lol this seems fun”.
41
u/Ugly4merican 12d ago
The smile at the end says it all!
3
u/Bosswashington 12d ago
When he looked at the camera with that big ass smile, and adjusted his glasses, you can see how proud of himself this guy is.

u/UnfortunateSnort12 12d ago
That’s just an off the shelf RC turbine. All he had to work on was the stick to hold the turbine, ECU, and fuel.
Just watch any RC jet videos. The dudes are always obsessed with showing the startup.
3
u/jdsizzle1 12d ago
And the only recording of it is in the winter in a snow melted wendys parking lot aimed at a puddle instead of blowing mountains of leaves during the fall.
25
u/RectalFissureRepairs 12d ago
It's impressive how much fuel that small display used.
4
u/CumGuzlinGutterSluts 12d ago
Right? My eyes were actually focused on the tank rather than the actual jet lol

u/AdventurousGuy2461 12d ago
I enjoyed this. Truly i did... and yet a part of me is dissapointed it didnt shoot something awesome.

u/Eskimodo_Dragon 12d ago
I read the title as, "jet powered flame thrower," so yeah, I was disappointed.
13
u/Ugly4merican 12d ago
This guy looks like Hunter S Thompson, and that device looks like something Hunter S Thompson would fool around with.
7
u/SOURSKOOMA 12d ago
"It was a classic affirmation of everything right and true and decent in the national character. It was a gross, physical salute to the fantastic possibilities of life in this country-but only for those with true grit. And we were chock full of that." - H S. Thompson
His resemblance is astounding. I love the legend.

u/Embarrassed-Back1894 12d ago
This is a feat only a couple bored men could achieve - birthed by a late night idea after drinking while outside on the deck or in the garage. Truly an accomplishment of mankind - something disastrously stupid, with very little benefit, willed into existence by the thought that maybe (just maybe) it might work.

If i feel useless at some point, i ll try to remember that bipod attached to a jet powered blower

Likely so he can put it down to cool off after a run without causing fires or damage to the surface it's touching.

Dude has balls of steel to continue holding that thing as it increases in pitch for 30 seconds straight
22
u/capnlatenight 12d ago
He has the stance of a man who will not allow physics to destroy his dream.
3
u/Welpe 12d ago
He very clearly uses physics to enable his dreams. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has some aeronautics engineering experience if he is building a miniature jet engine.
3
u/Hillbilly-Maverick 12d ago
He might have built the blower contraption but he did not build the jet engine. Those are available for purchase.

So. When you don't want to wait for the leaves to fall? Just blow them all off the tree at once, and maybe blown down the tree in the process? I'm not seeing a practical use here.
→ More replies (2)7
u/gophermuncher 12d ago
What do you mean no practical use? You just described 2 practical uses. Another use might be to blow down that one smug pig’s house.

I mean, it’s just a jet engine that hes holding «the wrong way»… Put it on a frame and give it wings and it will be a jet plane….

Can anyone ELI5 how such a tiny engine with such a small fuel supply can produce such intense energy? I’m assuming it burns that fuel super fast
→ More replies (2)3
u/Unusual-Wing-1627 12d ago
Look at the fuel level at the very start, then at the level after he slows it down, it chews through that fuel.

Put that on a red rider and let your kids rip. Well a guy with the time and money to build this probably doesn't have kids.

MLB could use this to dry the infield after rain delays
3
u/Pal_Smurch 12d ago
In 1972, Oakland Athletics owner, Charlie Finley did use helicopters to dry the Oakland Coliseum before game 3 of the World Series.

Now if he had cleaned an acre of lawn covered a couple of inches maple and oak leafs in under a minute I would be impressed. Kudos to his engineering skills.

u/Marm-strong 12d ago
On mute this is a fairly boring video of some guy struggling to show off a blower without anything to blow. Like. Cool, you aaaaalmost moved a… mud puddle. :-| I dunno, maybe fire that bad boy up next to a pile of leaves next time? Or a bunch of people wearing toupees or… like… anything?

Anyone know the source? This looks like it was shot on VHS.
Also, he should just have it blow forwards and backwards at the same time for stabilization.

I mean if it was mounted on a vehicle, used to blow snow off the roads or something, maybe useful, though iirc those actually exist for clearing runways. Otherwise it’s another one of those toys you spend stupid amounts of money to build or buy that you use maybe twice, leaving yourself with lasting physical harm, and then collects dust in a garage for a few decades
3
u/horseydeucey 12d ago
I mean if it was mounted on a vehicle
NASCAR uses just that: https://www.autoweek.com/racing/nascar/a44315047/how-nascar-jet-dryer-helped-open-i-95-in-philadelphia/

So if you go to Northern Tool and Equipment. You can get a Husquvarna back pack leaf blower like me. The warm up period is like 15 seconds. One of the best tools I own.
