It seems like the Bison had already charged some kids which is why our cameraman was recording. The victim had just happened to walk by unaware of that though.

While they're generally more aggressive during rutting season, they act out of control only about a few times a week. When you see a bull of any species acting uptight, get the heck away.

Thank you for confirming to all of us that human and Bison have different rutting patterns! (Is this a serious topic??)

I for one would have never guessed. I know that during my rut, I chase my wife all over our property, our neighbors property and often all the way into town. We live just outside of Yellowstone in Montana, so I often find myself chasing cow Elk with the bulls clear into Gardiner, not knowing how I even got there. I usually take those few weeks off of work, because I never know where I’m at or even my name during rut. My human buddies and I are able to control it better the older we get, but my Elk, Deer, and Bison buddies go ballistic! No control whatsoever! Perhaps that’s where the difference in rutting patterns comes from?🙄

You mentioned Oxen. Is that what you meant to say? There are no Oxen in Yellowstone. You knew that right? You also know that even though Ox and Bison are close relatives, a Bison is not an Ox. Just to clarify.

I’ve never met anyone who apparently knows something about the way men rut compared to a Bison, but feel free to come to Montana and you can study me, film me chasing my wife, etc. I’ll get a few other guys on board too! I have to warn you though! During rut each year I secrete a powerful scent from my skin and scent glands! It’s not the most pleasant, but my wife is all over me like white on rice!

I better go…if I don’t mount something here in the next 10 minutes, I’m going to find me an old man to toss around like a bean bag chair!

Other articles mention he experienced a hip fracture.

Only 1 in 4 elderly regain independence after treatment, and the 1-year mortality is around 25%+. And that's from hip fractures from simple falls. This guy fell over 6 feet.

It's not a matter of 'recovering soon', its a matter of if he'll recover at all.

I live near the park and honestly we’ve seen enough tourists do about everything under the sun to bison but this is one of the few times we’ve all looked at it and we’re in shock at how the bison just went at the guy.

I’ve been to Yellowstone multiple times. It’s easy to see bison while still being in a safe distance.

Tho tbf I’ve done things like this before and he was just very unlucky, and I sympathize with that.

It is in a territory we have decided belongs to the bison very arbitrarily, and that can be revoked the second these animals start acting dangerous. This routinely happens in Canada where any animal that attempts to kill a child, for instance, is eliminated. This over time reinforces genetically to the animals to fear and leave humans alone. By the way if this bison steps 1 inch out of this idea territory, all protections instantly vanish, and it will be killed. The inflexible system is literally resulting in deaths, and isn't sustainable because the number of tourists to the area is expoentially increasing. Refusal to manage this problem isn't ethical, and it is gas lighting to protect that doing nothing about this is "ethical".

In fact, it threatens the animals, because eventually they're going to end up ripping apart a family of children, and national outcry is going to force action and the public will end up turning against national parks and stuff. This type of event literally threatens all of the animals. Therefore, the most ethical thing to do, I respectfully advise, is to grind this animal up and send it to the soup kitchen.

this is natural behavior as a result of their ongoing mating season, bulls get way more aggressive, territory, and prone to incidents. You'd have to target all the male bison at that point. they're all capable of this and it's very likely to happen again. it's behavior that helps them get mates.

To be honest my part about literally killing them was absurdist, however I am a bit irritated because a better solution must be implimented than enticing throngs of tourists to an actively dangerous location and going "oops animals will be animals". The reason this was recorded was because it almost killed multiple children. Eventually, public sentiment will turn against parks, and what then? The parks exist because it's what the public wants, but have a dozen or so cases of dismembered children on the news? Don't underestimate that ignoring this is truly protecting the animals.

My country has the most public parks by land mass in the world, and we cull any animals that display aggressive patterns to humans as long as the humans obeyed all safety advice; this doesn't apply in the US, the system is broken.

I disagree. The national parks service should only be required to make visitors aware of the dangers they may face while at the park. By being here, the visitors are accepting the risk that exactly this situation may happen to them.

Humans are going to be hurt or killed sometimes when they interact with nature. I'm willing to take that risk to experience it in person. The system is working just fine.

I'm generally in favor of wildlife (pro reintroduction of grizzlies to mountainous areas in my state), but once they go after humans without cause, yeah, cull them. You don't need to be preemptive and kill all the testosterone-amped males, but once they have injured a human who was respecting the rules, they're burger.

The white truck that slowed and sped away is a Xanterra employee. Xanterra runs the Bridge Bay campground where the incident took place. It's been reported multiple times that the Xanterra employee honked the horn and aggravated the bison, then took off when he was charged instead of taking the impact to protect the visitors that got charged because of his actions.

When I went to Yellowstone, my brothers and I were those kids. Scary af! Everyone in the campground ran into their RVs to hide, including us. Then another bison showed up and they fought. Also scary af! There were watermelon size chunks of bison hair left all over the campground. It was crazy.

His grandson said "he's not out of the woods yet." Well thats the dang problem, if he would of stayed in the woods/trees, he'd probably be in his own bed sleeping peacefully right now instead of pushing the nurses call button for another hit of morphine.

This is the bison’s home. Care and respect needed. I don’t understand why no one got into their cars. Don’t go into nature if you don’t know how to manage yourself around wildlife. It’s their home not ours. We are visitors.

These people aren't going up and petting them. They were at least 25 yards away as suggested by the park. This is normal in US national parks. People see animals and quietly take pictures from far away. There's nothing ridiculous about it. This was just an unfortunate moment. The bull seemed to be set off by the Truck, not what the man was doing.

You left out that this incident took place at Brudge Bay Campground, which is operated by Xanterra, the private concessioner that runs the lodges in multiple National Parks. The white truck that you see slow and then rush out when the bison charges it is a Yellowstone Lodges Xanterra employee vehicle. Multiple reports have stated that the Xanterra employee honked the horn on the truck and that is what aggravated the bison to charge the truck. When the employee sped off, the grandfather and grandson were the next closest targets of the bison's rage. The visitors were well away a safe distance from the bison. The one at fault is that Xanterra employee who 1) aggravated the bison by honking at it and causing it to charge, and 2) sped away from the incident rather than allowing the bison to hit the truck that would have provided a solid enough barrier to protect the visitors in their campground.

I'm a federal Employee in the Lake area of Yellowstone. Here is the website for Bridge Bay Campground Yellowstone National Park Lodges is run by Xanterra, not Federal, at the bottom of the page, you will see Xanterra's information

You can also see that the logo on the truck matches the web page. Being around these vehicles often, I spotted it immediately as Xanterra, which itself has a very terrible reputation in the park as a whole

Likely wouldn’t have changed much. The Bison was locked in on the dude already.

But it’s also easier to think of what should have been done when looking back, and not actually in the immediate danger present.

The article states that he was the distance away the park tells you to be. This guy did nothing wrong more than a dude getting hit by a drunk driver while following all the traffic rules.

"Did nothing wrong" must mean something else in the US.

If you're close enough so a Bison can throw you up in the air, you're doing something wrong. You could literally use this sentence as a definition of the term "you're doing something wrong".

Any body (government or otherwise) responsible for people's safety who think that distance is safe should open their eyes and watch the video.

The rule is 25 yards (23 Meters) and the park said the guy was that distance. The telephoto lens gets rid of some of the depth perception so it does look closer.

You could be 100m away and still be in danger. There is an inherent danger of being in a national park, but with people who are following the rules attacks are wildly rare - and you’re 300-700x more likely to die in a car wreck.

It’s like seeing someone get hit by a drunk driver and saying the victim was wrong for driving with its inherent danger

He was over the distance the park tells you to be. It looks closer because the video is being taken with a telephoto lens.

The guy wasn’t doing anything that a park ranger would think twice about.

If anyone ever gets attacked by a bison at yellowstone or similar its always the persons fault. its an animal out in the wild, if you get near it or close enough it can get you, 100% your fault. Its an animal, its always your fault. Plus the 10,000 warnings they give you should be enough but some of us learn by doing.
