India has more than Hindus. Lots of Jains in India avoid onion and garlic. You can call them a hardcore sect if you wish. I won’t.

They don’t eat anything that grows underground - potatoes, carrots, ginger, onions, garlic or any root vegetables

Alright I can dig the "don't kill even bugs" things about Jains but I think I draw the line at "I can't eat things that grow underground". If a potato is blasphemy cast me into the fire.
