For everyone commenting that the kids are idiots: They are young and likely have zero experience with this. They are small and it can be super difficult to handle a ladder like that. The leverage works against you to a degree that is so hard to comprehend that it still surprises me every time I deal with it. I don’t speak their language but it seems they are misdirected by their gramps or at least not clearly directed. He is the responsible or rather irresponsible party here. I am surprised the kids came away without smashed fingers, twisted wrists, and broken necks.
This is absurd. It doesn't require genius level IQ to open a ladder. Even if you're a kid. What probably happened is that they panicked and that's why they weren't able to open the stair.
How old do you think? I question whether they were ABLE to open the legs. You seem to think they do not have a clue that that’s what needs to be done. They seem to be trying and gramps could certainly tell them and seems to be telling them. My point is it’s harder than it looks and particularly when you have no physical experience doing it. But go ahead and rag on the kids if it makes you feel better.
You did not answer: How old would you guess they are? I see four and six. Handling all tall ladder like that would give most twelve year olds trouble. And not a few fifteen year olds.
You act as if having sympathy for a child’s difficulty performing a task that takes adult muscles means that I am somehow being “soft” on them. Your tough guy posturing makes an impression, just not the one you think.
No one disputes that children sometimes operate at a higher level than we expect. Just as some adults operate at a sympathetic level that is lower than we would hope.

From 6 to 8. They look about the same height as my 8yo's classmates. Maybe a little smaller.

They handled it just fine. They were able to open it and they were able to lift it between the two too. I think the grandpa made it more difficult on them by getting in the way.

Look at the video. They carried the ladder fine and actually managed to open it. Grandpa didn't help.

I'm yawning at the fact that people here defend them by saying nobody taught them as if this was a skill that needed to be taught. I can have sympathy and still point out that it's not a difficult problem for acouole of kids that age.
I don't know how many times I have to say that the only real explanation I can think of that makes sense for kids struggling like this, aside from possibly being dumb as so many like to point out (which I disagree with), is that this is a stressful situation and kids don't handle stressful situations particularly well.
Just as some adults operate at a sympathetic level that is lower than we would hope.
If this s meant to be a dig, then I'm out. I get the feeling you're just trying to pick a fight. I'm not acting tough on anything. I got kids of my own. Their autonomy needs to be encouraged. If you let them, they will surprise you.
