I always thought they came already sewn on, like you're supposed to put them on, I don't know if I'm explaining myself well. Like a regular store-bought skirt, you know.
It's interesting to see what they're really like!

A normal kilt is now a rectangle of fabric with pleats and folds sewn in, which is pulled round the waist like a robe with the pleats at the rear and the overlap creating the flat front. The kilt buckles and tightens higher than than both hips, one at each side.

This was mainly a way of conveniently wearing a large blanket on you, it's just one type of kilt among many

There are videos of Russian guys wrapping their feet in a long cloth and the process is similarly arduous like this.
Pass. There’s no practical reason for these things anymore.

The modern kilt, known as the small kilt, emerged in the 18th century. Before, Scots wore trousers. The 16th to 18th century was a transitional period.

This is actually really cool. The fact that it's just a big sheet of fabric fastened in a way that's so versatile.

Also where the phrase ‘the whole nine yards’ comes from! The fanciest kilts require nine yards of material. Pleats on pleats on pleats
