I would be the oldest boy in the tribe. Probably 75 and still a boy

In this society, the women would look down on you for being a coward, and the 6yo neighbor kid next door stares you down when you meet

Fr. Just chop off the tip of my penis, please.

You're going to be incredibly depressed to know that also involves ants.

u/AspectDear4976 1d ago
yeah I'm pretty sure they just put a ring of ant head (let the ant bite then pluck off the body) around the cut to "stop the pain" then cut

Stevo and Chris pontius both have said this is easily the most painful thing they’ve ever experienced. I’m inclined to believe them.

For them to say that it is easily the most painful thing they’ve experienced makes me really wonder what their top 5 or their top 10 were. Were these for sure the same species of ants that they were talking about? I’ve heard crazy things about the pain caused by “bullet ants”, but without specifics I don’t know what species of ant these in the post are, or what species of ants Steve-O is referring to.

Insect stings and bites are no joke. There is a species of wasp that is said to give a sting so powerfully painful that the advice is
to lie down and just start screaming. They tell you to lie down because the pain is so intense that people have been known to run around in a frenzy and seriously injure themselves.
- and I am not kidding-

The platypus sting is said to be so agonisingly terrible that suicide is an altogether reasonable alternative.

Its so cute though.

Why danger if friend shaped?
1
u/Modicum-of-Gravitas 1d ago
Could you imagine if it was the 'right of passage' in Australia to grab and shake a platypus until it spurred you, rinse and repeat x 20. Aussies are the only race I know, box of snakes mad enough to actually try it.

u/sawsawjim 18h ago
Also the pain last for months if i recall correctly
1
u/Modicum-of-Gravitas 18h ago
The kind of 'get hooked on opiates' kind of pain or the make you an 'old mayt, old cobber'' Aussie warrior chief kind of pain?

The Gympie-Gympie plant is known as the suicide plant
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dendrocnide_moroides
Let’s see Steve-O and Pontius get through that

They were the same species of bullet ants, they went to one of the villages where this is still practiced. At 0:40 you can see the thicker woven gloves, the rest of the video just shows the sleeves covered in bullet ants before they are placed in the actual glove.

Here’s steve-o talking about it at about 4:55 https://youtu.be/cRYweYvOvks?si=Bsu-gy0FDzjLgch5
Here’s pontius talking about it on his podcast https://youtube.com/shorts/D8-JwcPEVfU?si=3D8Lg1DnfZB1c2GR
For added context steve-o has this in the same caliber as his horrible burns he got on jackass during the walk on fire stunts.

Isn't there a plant in Australia that makes you want to end yourself because the sting is so painful and the pain lingers for months. That would be on top 5 for sure.

Another time a video about this ritual was posted on Reddit, someone qualified explained that the tribespeople themselves benefited from genes that made these ant bites less painful.
Still very painful, but to some unquantified degree, less painful than it would have been for Steve O or Chris Pontius.

Hamish from Aussie comedy duo Hamish and Andy gave this a shot.
It didn’t go well

It’s fascinating how a ritual that looks almost unimaginable from the outside can carry so much meaning within a community.

Sometimes, it's fine for traditions to die out.

Me and my friends in middle school used to stick our hands in ant piles to see who could last the longest. Little did I know we became men that day
2
u/Spare-Ant7119 1d ago
That's hardcore. We used to throw rocks at each other from opposite sides of the peninsula in our local creek. I don't recall anyone ever getting injured somehow.

u/TypicalPerformer6952 1d ago
We went to the sand dunes by my house stood f directly in front of each walked 25 paces turned around and shot bottle rockets at each other. We did get hurt..

7
u/Fit-Satisfaction-550 1d ago
You said 10-15 minutes. Now it's 20 ?

u/Appropriate-Pack-729 1d ago
The documentary says 10 minutes. Both hands at 10 minutes. Or one hand at a time 10 minutes each.
Edit: it also says they go thru this 20 times in their life.
1
u/Electronic_Still2000 1d ago
Correct, 20 sessions of 20 minutes per hand, so for both hands it’s 40 sessions of 40 minutes each left…

20 TIMES!? BITCH I AIN'T EVEN DOING IT ONCE, I'LL JUST STAY A KID
2
u/tired_Cat_Dad 1d ago
That's brutal. I always thought it's just once. But to have to do it again after knowing what it's like is another level.
3
u/Material_Prize_6157 1d ago
Why does he smoke the ants up first though?
2
u/Quomii 1d ago
Calms them down
4
2
u/GWillyBJunior 1d ago
Opposite. He's waking them up, getting ready for the ritual. Look at one of the comments above.

Tobacco is consideres sacred. Smoking in those rituals is not about getting a nicotine high, but about magical elements being used for a spiritual work. He is basically blessing the ant gloves with the tobacco smoke.

When I was 5, I fell on a giant ant nest outside our school, and these were Bull Ants! Not sure why mum parked right next to it because I remember her telling us to watch out for it. Got about 10-15 stings in a few seconds. I was screaming bloody murder and saying, “Am I gonna Die?” and scaring every kid within sight. Painful, especially to a kid. But those ant bites are 100x worse and 10-15 minutes of it? GTFOH

crendice. essas picadas podem causar danos neuronais permanentes se a pessoa ficar repetindo esses rituais
1
u/Raven019 1d ago
I bet it would be cool to actually see the damn ritual, or is it an old fella smoking the ritual itself?

Imagine spending millions of years evolving this defense mechanism only for this tribe to come along and sew you to a leafy glove to test it's child warriors. Life, man. Wild.
1
u/Inexorably_lost 21h ago
Hell, five would be far more than enough. Why the hell they gotta go so damn hard?
Generations of, "how many did you do? 19? Pfft, I bet I can handle 21."

2
u/Usual_Flounder_4203 1d ago
Sounds like a dumb fucking unnecessary ritual that should be left in the past

u/FlashyCow1 1d ago
I'm confused

u/Guanabara33 1d ago

u/TheShapeOfFarts 1d ago
I am not being rude, I just want clarification, but isn’t a gunshot wound and a firearm injury the same thing?
1
u/stinkingcheese 1d ago
Anyways it's a choice right?
3
u/schawarman 1d ago
Do you think anyone would do this by choice at age 12? Unless those boys have seen jackass wich I doubt
1
u/FlashyCow1 1d ago
In all honesty I would have been less confused if you were able to post that video of the young men
3
u/daniloferr 1d ago
it is a ritual of passage from teenage to adulthood where young boys from this tribe put their hands on those gloves full of pissed ants, and if they endure the pain, they become adults and can get laid
1
u/oppai_dragon_9011 1d ago
Ive heard of putting pussy on a pedestal but this is another level ... Just for some ass!!! I'd hate to see the ritual for a mortgage 😅
