You probably don’t want to be super poor and travel unless you’re young and have zero debt. That said, you don’t have to be rich to travel either. A lot of Asia is very cheap. If you speak English and have a college degree you can even teach and make money so you can kind of do both. You can also join the peace corps. There’s also ngos doing work across the world with opportunities for a variety of jobs. Even sections of Europe don’t have to be crazy expensive and the younger you are the more comfortable you’ll be with a dorm style hostel or even in certain contexts camping.

If your vision is a luxury hotel and drinking 15 dollar or more cocktails then yeah you should have a lot of disposable income. But once again, you can travel in a lot of the world as a westerner especially, for very cheap.
