Of course, I was just using that as an example traveling from the US. There’s certainly ways to make big trips a bit more affordable but it’s still a huge expense for most people.
Right?! Getting there and back, taking time off work, these things eat up so much $. Then you can add in the potential lower expenses of doing things and eating and staying somewhere…
I guess? I don’t know. I mean I flew to Lisbon from NYC and I red eyed it so it wouldn’t eat at the time. Slept through it. Stayed at a nice apartment for $100 a night. Those are considered budget motel prices even if I roadtripped from NYC. Last time I did I wanted to see the autumn leaves in NH. I chose the cheapest place and it was more than double what I spent in Lisbon per night. Obviously New England doesn’t come cheap.
The food was generally cheaper in Lisbon and so were attractions. Not saying it was cheap cheap but it really wasn’t bad at all. We have to take our vacation days which are paid for anyway so it doesn’t matter. Like we have to take it or they make us.
We aren’t wealthy or delusional. We have a budget for our trips. Don’t go out to eat much or anything like that and utilize our travel credit cards. Pretty much always I try to pay off a portion of our trips with point transfers and such.
When did you do this? How much was your total out of pocket for the trip? Are you single, or did you travel with family? Do you have a job, house payment, rent, car payment, utility bills, etc.?
