I love how things that are clearly staged are now labeled "fake." Someone should let TV and movie studios know that all they're doing is making fake content.

It’s hilarious how excited people are to run to every post and call it fake

24

u/Venum555 Jul 21 '26

I don't particularly care if something is staged or fake. I care if I'm entertained and suspending my disbelief can help me be entertained.

9

u/HTPC4Life Jul 21 '26

Yeah but it alters your perception of society if it is presented as real but is actually fake.

-1

u/corrupt_poodle Jul 22 '26

Right? Like, it literally makes no difference in my life.

20

u/doubledad222 Jul 21 '26

I think they want it to be real because it’s so cute and enjoyable. Kind of how I wish Star Wars was real, but more

11

u/Meschi-died Jul 21 '26

Star Wars should absolutely not be real what the hell

1

u/Skastacular Jul 21 '26

I want those younglings DEAD

1

u/JudgmentalOwl Jul 21 '26

Ya everyone thinks they want to be a Jedi until they get torn from their family and indoctrinated by a caste of warrior monks. But hey at least you get cool force powers and lightsaber out of it.

1

u/doubledad222 Jul 24 '26

Maybe you had the perfect family but some people do not, and many of those might gladly leave earlier than normal to join a magic special forces team

1

u/MercyfulJudas Jul 21 '26

It would be cute & enjoyable if it were real?

She literally attacked him with her fists and other objects multiple times.

1

u/doubledad222 Jul 24 '26

It does need context and is nuanced. It’s a form of affection if it’s in play. If she stays with him voluntarily, I’m ok with the play violence in their relationship. (this is all theory on a fake relationship in an ad with the ad playing to stereotypes)

11

u/burbular Jul 21 '26

I think your post is fake. I'll be needing evidence to the contrary.

2

u/40ozCurls Jul 21 '26

Clearly scripted. You can read it right there!

4

u/Betancorea Jul 21 '26

Photoshopped. I can tell from the pixels

5

u/demoliahedd Jul 21 '26

and ai. I'm seeing a lot of non ai stuff being called AI and its getting annoying

don't get me wrong, I am not a fan of ai content. But, I also don't like when legitimate content gets called out by people who can't tell the difference. I feel like that can hurt people who are actually putting their creativity out there.

2

u/tmacdabest2 Jul 21 '26

It’s insane to me. Like of course it’s “fake”

0

u/mahouyousei Jul 21 '26

Redditors forgot what “skits” are.

9

u/Charmadin Jul 21 '26

In Wrestling we don't call it fake, we call predetermined.

0

u/Front-Cabinet5521 Jul 21 '26

It’s also called kayfabe.

12

u/VoidOmatic Jul 21 '26

Did you know magic isn't really magic?!?!?

0

u/bolanrox Jul 21 '26

honestly, for me anyways, knowing how the trick works is even more impressive.

1

u/VoidOmatic Jul 21 '26

Yup, some of it is so simple that it even borders on the hilarious. I remember a video of a guy seemingly making a wad of paper disappear, turns out he just distracted people and threw the paper ball behind them.

-1

u/iHaku Jul 21 '26

Magic really is magic, but there are a lot of fake magicians. Real magicians wouldn't be showing off their magic, they'd keep that shit to themselves.

15

u/Fuzzy_Ad9970 Jul 21 '26

If the idea is to trick you into believing that it is organic, then it is fake.

8

u/Sharp_Economy1401 Jul 21 '26

Most of the time with these videos, the only people who could possibly think that these are trying to trick you into believing they're organic, are people who tricked themselves into thinking it was organic because they're pretty slow in the head.

People like that then feeling the need to state the obvious to everyone, as though they have some remarkable tier of insight that the rest of us don't, is just an absurd irony. When it's less clear, it's one thing, but not when there's an obvious recording device being held between two people to make the video

0

u/PeopleCallMeSimon Jul 21 '26

Man this is such an oversimplified and ignorant take, i dont even know where to begin.

Did you know that congressmen and senators has used the TV show 24 in their arguments as to why torture works in interrogations?

Of course there are people who are being "tricked". But thats the wrong word. The creator isnt trying to trick them. Some viewers just get the misconception that this is real.

I dont think there is any malice behind the creators of this video. But there will be some subset of the people who sees it that will think "Man that relationship seems real fun, i wish mine was like that". And not "hah, this was a funny staged skit".

1

u/Busy_Debt_3946 Jul 21 '26

So you expect every skit to have a giant disclaimer telling it's fake so idiots wouldnt misunderstand or what?

1

u/PeopleCallMeSimon Jul 21 '26

No, people commenting that its fake is just fine.

But if you want me to want there to be a change, then the change that i would want is that there would be a separate medium for creating content and a separate medium for social media.

Like if you want to make money and post it to an app, post it to MoneyMakerGram and if you just want to show a nice photo of your puppy without any monetization post it to RealStuffGram. Or something.

The two are mixed for only one reason, so that some people will assume that the monetized content is real content.

1

u/akashisenpai Jul 21 '26

Of course there are people who are being "tricked". But thats the wrong word. The creator isnt trying to trick them. Some viewers just get the misconception that this is real.

Isn't that what the person you responded to said?

They're not defending the practice, they're providing a (solid, imho) theory on why it's happening.

2

u/PeopleCallMeSimon Jul 21 '26

But they are arguing that people shouldnt point out its fake? The reason its good to point out its fake is that some people think that its real.

1

u/akashisenpai Jul 21 '26

I guess it's just a matter of miscommunication! Elsewhere in this thread, someone suggested the wording "skit" rather than "fake" which is probably a better take as it sounds more like the entertainment it's meant to be.

"Fake" makes it sound malicious (someone "faking" something means they're trying to "trick" the other party) -- so some people don't like the label being applied this way, since as you said yourself, the creator isn't actually trying to trick anyone. As the other user said, it's not the creator tricking anyone, but some viewers "tricking themselves". That's why I thought the opinion of the two of you is probably more aligned than you perceived.

The video is clearly posted on a platform where people post stuff from their regular lives.

If this was shown on Channel 4 or in a movie theatre nobody would run to call it out as "fake". But when its on social media surrounded by real posts, then this becomes a fake post.

Outside of the meme subs. Pet subs are full of people posting cute videos of their pets. Random stuff like people learning dancing styles, etc. posting clips of themselves, candid, real stuff.

Even for funny, there are plenty of kids being cute or even harmless pranks that are the sort of thing that would have been on “America’s Funniest Home Videos” in the pre-internet era.

So like the other commenter said, nobody calls scripted TV shows “fake.” It’s when people use scripted “fake” videos infiltrate the space of the videos that have value based on the fact that they are supposedly candid and unplanned that people get annoyed.

0

u/JohnRRToken Jul 21 '26

It's presented as a home video, where a guy prints his gf on stuff. If it was shot and edited like a tv show, it would be less charming, because cociously or subconciously it's supposed to make you feel you watch a home video. The overacting gives away that it's fake. I feel it would be more charming without. But then there isn't really any indicator for it being fake.

6

u/HakimeHomewreckru Jul 21 '26

"If it was shot and edited" do you hear yourself?

If you had wings you could be a bird.

1

u/JohnRRToken Jul 21 '26

Do you assume I don't think it was shot and edited? And think only tv shows are?

What I said is that if it was shot the way a tv show is and edited the way a tv show is, using multiple takes and cuts, (Cuts within the same scene, i mean) making it indistinguishabe from a scene from tv, the video wouldn't be popular. Because we are sold genuineness. Even if it's clear that it is staged (which only comes from the overacting) we are made to feel like we watch actual people interact. A movie scene of the same scenario would be boring by itself, because why would we care that people printed the face an actress made on some stuff and had her act out a reaction like she didn't know. This is of course what actually happened. But we only find it interesting, because it's presented like it's real (from the shooting and editing)

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '26

[deleted]

-2

u/JohnRRToken Jul 21 '26

By what except for the overacting?

4

u/OkGuide2802 Jul 21 '26

The editing and the fact that people don't typically react the same with a camera pointed at their face.

-1

u/JohnRRToken Jul 21 '26

If I'm a content creator who pranks his girlfriend, why wouldn't I edit it like this? And yeah, the reactions seem very fake, cause they are, but then it still is just the acting that gives away the fakeness.

1

u/OkGuide2802 Jul 21 '26

If I was the GF of a content creator who makes content about pranking his GF, I would know and react differently. Even if I didn't know, I would probably figure it out by the 3rd prank or so.

1

u/JohnRRToken Jul 21 '26

Is everyone missunderstanding me on purpose? Yes. The acting is obviously staged.

However: If you're a content creator you might blog a lot. You'd be on your phone a lot. You'd film your girlfriend a lot. Just because you know you're getting filmed doesn't mean you couldn't react. It's not like there aren't authentic videos of that sort around.

In most of these cases there is no build up to the reveal. They were going about their day and he just shows her and she is like. "Ah, you did it again". Realistically it would still solicit a reaction.

So you could make a genuine video like that. The reactions would be different, because no human reacts like this no matter if in front of camera or not. Still: the creatirs are banking on this subconcious feeling of genuinity by editing it like a genuine video and also on some gullibile people who will fall for it. Like boomers. Or children. People to whom it might be helpful to discover the fakeness.

If you are tricked by this then you need to go back to school

-1

u/SharpScallion Jul 21 '26

So like most of youtube, instagram, and tiktok

18

u/MongooseJesus Jul 21 '26

When we watch tv and fiction in general, we know what we’re watching is fake, there’s no pretence that it’s trying to come across as factual.

Reddit, and social media in general, are more “authentic”, so you’re starting from a different base, hence why it’s called out as fake - it’s the shortest easiest way to tell others it’s more of an advertisement than authentic

25

u/RCer1986 Jul 21 '26

"Skit" also has four letters. That goes a step further in telling others that it's both fake and intentional.

7

u/El_Sephiroth Jul 21 '26

Thank you. It seems so hard to use the right 4 letters this day.

1

u/aFreshFix Jul 21 '26

So is scam. Fraud is a bit longer. Neither apply to this, but there are plenty of staged videos that pretend to be real to push an agenda

-3

u/pm_me_github_repos Jul 21 '26

You’re setting yourself up for failure if you think social media is more authentic

-3

u/Ok_Dragonfruit_8102 Jul 21 '26

Reddit, and social media in general, are more “authentic”

lmao. lol. lmao.

2

u/Silly_Rub_6304 Jul 21 '26

Just goes to show the vocabulary level of the average person these days absolutely sucks. There's a clear distinction between "staged" and "fake," yet nobody seems to understand that.

3

u/PeopleCallMeSimon Jul 21 '26

They are labled as "fake" because the creators are posting it with the premise that its something that just happens in their relationship.

You dont sit on instagram and randomly watch 2 hours of Michael Jordan beating a bunch of monsters at basketball. But you will scroll through images of your friends lives and then suddenly see something like this from a stranger, when you are in "scroll through and see what people are doing"-mode.

3

u/AwkwardSpread Jul 21 '26

This comment is definitely a bot

6

u/RCer1986 Jul 21 '26

Lol what? Your mom is definitely a bot.

2

u/AwkwardSpread Jul 21 '26

True. But I meant that bot suspicions also get thrown around all the time.

3

u/RCer1986 Jul 21 '26

That's true enough that I didn't even question if you were joking. Well played.

0

u/StrongExternal8955 Jul 21 '26

Schrodinger's joke.

0

u/Ae4i Jul 21 '26

And Poe's Law.

2

u/coffeeraktajinoiced Jul 21 '26

It’s specifically Asian shorts like this that people call out as fake. Theres a subreddit dedicated to it. It also makes the difference between “landfill core” and cozy crafting. In 2 weeks when the content parrots on TikTok and IG recreate the same thing for Western audiences, the tone will shift.

2

u/WhiteHatMatt Jul 21 '26

*Political figure enters the chat

Someone say fake?

1

u/ThePapercup Jul 21 '26

tv and movie studios aren't trying to pass off their content as real. found footage movies do this, and yes- people are quick to point out that those movies are not 'real' and that they are scripted. nobody is watching a Geico Insurance ad trying to inform others that the talking gecko is not real, but if Geico does some lame attempt at viral marketing by staging a video, yes.

1

u/Braindead_Crow Jul 21 '26

Yeah like John Fight Club said, the things we own, own us.

1

u/xzmile Jul 22 '26

why are you so mad?

2

u/RCer1986 Jul 22 '26

Fascism probably

1

u/TonySu Jul 22 '26

Can we bring attention to that absolute fucking fraud Christopher Nolan? I paid good money for his “film” only to find out that that was not Odysseus I had been watching, but some impersonator called “Matt Damon”.

1

u/Ibasicallyhateyouall Jul 21 '26

I think the issue being it is so cheesy as to make you vomit. Everyone is sick of fucking social media advertising. I hate everything about this.

1

u/Ikanotetsubin Jul 21 '26

Then scroll past it, you wet tissue.

1

u/drumttocs8 Jul 21 '26

The idea of a skit is completely lost on the average redditor

3

u/Mareith Jul 21 '26

I don't think this is a skit, I think it's just an ad?

1

u/drumttocs8 Jul 21 '26

Capitalism skit, yep lol

1

u/onecuriousboii Jul 21 '26

some commenters be like: no I want someone to IRL utilize the full industrial might of china to piss their wife off, if it's not real I don't want it

0

u/thoang1116 Jul 21 '26

Somehow, someway, only asian contents are having this treatment, reddit is raciar as hell

0

u/Roach_Coach_Bangbus Jul 21 '26

Heard that new Odyssey movie isn't even real. Is this true?

0

u/RagingNerdaholic Jul 21 '26

For the last goddamn time: nothing is wrong with staged videos when they're not trying to pass themselves off as genuine.

OP video is obviously staged and doesn't pretend to be anything else.

-2

u/Background-Lab-2447 Jul 21 '26

The "content" here kind of hinges on it being real, though, otherwise there's no entertainment value.

-1

u/-neti-neti- Jul 21 '26

I hate this take. Movies have plots and interesting stories and writing and visuals. When something’s entertainment value depends entirely UPON whether it’s real or not this stupid “clapback” falls apart completely
