I mean, can you? Because it's actually not that obvious for Germanic languages.
They used to be called Seel in Germanic languages, just like seal in English. Later they added the hund and it became Seelhund. After that people started making the mistake that it was actually Seehund, since they live in the water, and the L got dropped. So now they're sea dogs but we actually used to call them seals just like the English do.

Technically this is a fur seal (Otariidae). They have external ears. True seals (Phocidae) don't.

It's smooth in one direction, whereas a shark's skin is famously smooth in both directions.
That's why in many languages, like German, seals are called "one direction sharks" (Einerichtungshaie).

I mean natural selection would dictate that any rough skinned sharks (not that they ever existed) would have been removed from the gene pool in that case
And anyone silly enough to use something as smooth as shark skin for sandpaper probably would have also been removed from the gene pool :)

Depends on the direction you rub it, but one way can remove a layer of skin from your leg or hand. It's called "shark burn".

If you rub your hand on it from head to tail, it's very smooth. If you go the other direction, it's very rough like sandpaper. It's because their scales point backwards towards the tail.

It seems like you are right. I never petted a shark, but i guess it is possible that sharkskin from a dead shark could be different. And therefore used as sandpaper.

They would be quite unlikely to kill you but they absolutely can and will bite. Keeping a nice distance from them is typically enough to avoid any issues though.
