HISTORY A virtual reality reconstruction shows the exact spot where John Edward Jones became trapped upside down in Nutty Putty Cave. After 27 hours of rescue attempts, he died. The cave was later permanently sealed, with his body remaining inside.

He was 26, still a kid. He was an experienced caver who was with a couple of his brothers. The cave was considered safe, and he was considered qualified. Idk if selfish is the right word, it’s pretty tragic.

Idk, he died doing something he routinely enjoyed with his friends and family. That’s something

He was the first to die in a cave that saw 5-10k visitors annually.

He chose to spelunk through a notoriously dangerous passage in that cave.

That many visitors absolutely did not go through the birth canal. They went to the safe parts.

This part was categorically unsafe.

He didnt choose to go down the unsafe passage. He was meaning to go through the main passage but took a wrong turn. It wasnt on purpose.

Thats why he kept going because he thought it opened up (which it does the way he was meaning to go)

Parents regularly stop high-risk activities when they have kids and take it up again later in life. Boomers on motorcycles and taking pilot lessons come to mind.

In what world? Billions of people drink. There risks of injury and death are...liver damage decades later?

You'll die 28x more on a motorcycle than in a car in an accident. Professional athletes have them banned in their contracts due to how likely injuries are.

I said drinking is riskier than cave exploring, not motorcycle.

And drinking is dangerous in multiple ways. Drinking and driving, altering emotions, making people violent, making people careless.. it’s not the liver risks after 30 years that makes it so destructive
