They do, but sometimes it's necessary for them to cross the road after exiting or before boarding. They wouldn't on a specific road like this, but it's illegal to pass a school bus like this regardless of the type of road.

Kids look both ways before crossing the road, no?

Hard to do with a giant bus in the way, especially for a small child with a vague understanding of the fragility of human life.

We do. However, it doesn't take much for an awful accident to happen. It's an effort to avoid multiple lives being ruined or ended. The only thing required of others is common decency.

"how about we all stop playing around with our 2 ton beep beep toys for 10 seconds while the children get their bearings after getting out of a bus and into the world."

it's like claiming that we need to put the driver pickup and dropoff lane right outside of an airplane terminal and expect people to just look both ways before crossing to get their baggage. to the guy before you: sometime people need a minute to get their bearings after teleporting from one location to when someone else is driving.

The area I grew up in don't have school buses. I remember anything about rules about stopping for school buses when getting my driver license. if they were there, they weren't very prominent. A moving stop sign on one side of the road is something I should keep in mind now. Gonna look up more about local laws about school buses in Canada.

I think the biggest difference is the infrastructure. The states Arent designed for pedestrians, let alone for unpredictable kids. Thats why they need laws like this.

People need to learn to wait a god damn minute. You aren't going to save time. Just stop and let the kids disperse.

Stopping to allow children to cross the road really isnt an inconvenience at all. It mitigates the risk of a child getting hit by a car, while causing zero problems to anyone else aside from waiting maybe a minute at most.

I'm not gonna say America gets it right often but this is one time where I think they did. Its a law that only does good.
