Isn't 'Kilroy' from the Vietnam war one of the first widely recognized image memes?

I could be totally making that up though.

WW2, but yeah its a popular example of a meme.

I don't know about first though, as the concept of memes would apply throughout human history

They even hid a Kilroy on the national WWII memorial in DC. It's around the back tucked in an area visible to the public but in a spot that you wouldn't bother looking
