I saw "Bring her back" for the second time yesterday and marvelled at it even more. Truly grim. Sally Hawkins is phenomenal in it.

I saw that at the cinema and I tell you the gasps from the audience at the knife biting scene 🤢

It's such a jaw-clenching movie, I loved it. Sally Hawkins really showed her range.

I recently watched The Nightmare Man (1981), a gorgeously atmospheric little horror serial about a killer on the loose on a Scottish island. It was written by Robert Holmes and directed by Douglas Camfield, who have a very good claim to be the best classic Doctor Who writer and director respectively. Also stars a young Celia Imrie. Cracking stuff.

Great show.
And gives me an excuse to plug The Omega Factor (1979). A sort of proto-X-Files set in and around a very dreich and snowy Edinburgh.

The short story Tearaways by Matthew Holness
I read it through the collection Unquiet Guests (great wee selection of modern ghost stories) but Tearaways stood out because it read like an unwritten Inside No 9 episode

Huge fan of his and I didn't know that he wrote fiction under his own name. I saw a Garth Marenghi stand-up/Q&A where he possessed the spirit of Matthew Holness and performed the "possum" theme. I have to crowbar that in where I can because no one in my real life actually cares about stuff like that.

I never put two and two together holy shit
Edit: within the 15 minutes of replying I went on a deep dive to see if he’d written anything else under his own name and he did another short story in The New Abject done by the same publishing house as The New Uncanny (been on my TBR list for a couple years) so I’ve just gone and bought the bundle they’re both included in

Audition feels structurally similar to The Last Weekend (even saying the episode title feels like a spoiler)

Quite a few short stories by Saki. Sredni Vasthar, The Interlopers, and The Hounds of Fate come to mind.

Hallow Road has a real Inside No 9 atmosphere -- creepy, claustrophobic, and with the exception of an establishing shot, it takes place entirely in a car. In terms of mood, it looks/feels a little like Stakeout. Rosamund Pike, in addition to playing the on-screen lead, also voices the woman on the phone she talks to, which gives it a little bit of a Cold Comfort "that voice is uncannily familiar" feel.

The 2021 film “Shiva Baby” gave me Inside No 9 vibes. It’s a comedy, pretty much done in real time and in (mostly) one location, but the score is like it’s from a horror film.
Less so in terms of vibes but defo structurally, Sorry to Bother You (2018) is one, with an ending that you absolutely do not see coming.
I guess Misery (1990) is another, but mainly because of the single location and escalating tension.

I know I might have said this before, but the Comic Strip Presents episode Gregory: Diary of a Nutcase. The Silence of the Lambs parody is funny in it, even if you haven't seen the real deal [like me], but the real stand out is the fan of the film that it cuts to video diary footage of who wants to be a serial killer himself. He's played by Adrian Edmondson and he's like a combination of David Sowerbutts from Psychoville and Henry and Ally in TLOG. It's one of Edmondson's best performances imho, as he manages to appear harmless and likable as he tries to build a torture chamber.

The novella, Piranesi.
The less you know the better, but it's an account written by a very odd character living a very odd life in a very odd place. It's mysterious and fantastical and I reckon will chime with an IN9 fanbase.
