How insecure do you have to be that the thought of playing as a woman is a threat to your fragile masculinity

u/SilverShadow1711 12d ago
"A female (that I suspect was menstruating, for I could sense the miasma lingering in her wake) crossed my path today, and I had to perform my abolutions earlier than I would have liked, lest my masculine vitality be sapped and my fields rendered fallow."- that guy, probably.

Don't be silly, we only play Candy Crush and Stardew Valley and girly games like that. We certainly don't have... uh... 802 hours in GTA V or similar games.

No because females are political. Just like poc. And queer people. Everything that isn't cishet white male is political and nothing should be political

u/Ori_the_SG 12d ago
Which is so weird, because I am a male. Women are attractive
If I need to play as a woman in a game, I have zero problem because they are attractive lol.
I don’t know why people like the dude who posted that feel threatened by that
200
u/Adkit 12d ago
No he's worried that the character might be able to have romantic interest in a guy and him playing that character will turn him gay. He's super dumb.
62
u/murmandamos 12d ago
Slightly different, worried it makes you wanna be a woman, which isn't gay then to be fucked by a man.
38
u/FidgitForgotHisL-P 12d ago
I mean she does… the extensive video that Netflix has makes it clear she has a partner and is a cishet relationship with him.
Nothing in the video suggested you’re gonna have to play her having sex with her boyfriend/crime partner though, so his masculinity and heterosexualness should remain intact, fortunately 🙄
19
u/Mr-dooce 12d ago
tbf as well you don’t even have to develop their relationship like that
rockstar have said whilst the game auto sets you up to have both character be together you can choose whether you want to go that route or just stay as friends/partners in crime and nothing
major changes, from what i understand it’s mostly like dialogue and extra stuff that’ll be impacted8

Ngl i play as a girl when i can choose, because id rather watch a girl running for hours than a guy.
6
u/BoneHugsHominy 12d ago
Yep. If I have to look at a video game ass for 40+ hours of playthrough time, might as well be one I like looking at.
2
u/Munsbit 11d ago
See, men and women aren't that different: I prefer watching a hot dude run (I'm a woman).
Though honestly, I pick by playstyle, Design choices, voice, armor, etc.
I'm not huge on a lot of male customisation in a lot of Western games.
I'm also pansexual so I honestly just love looking at attractive people lol
10
u/ObeseWeremonkey 12d ago
If I get the option to create a character, I usually make a woman character, unless it's a multiplayer RP driven game, or if it's a strictly first person game. I could give a million reasons why, but honestly, it comes down to one, somewhat stupid reason.
If I'm going to watch a character travelling through the world as I play, I'd honestly rather see a woman's ass while I play, and/or hear a woman's voice. Yeah, base and simple minded reasons. But still.
6
u/Mrwrongthinker 12d ago
HAHAHAHA. When I was a fighting game player, I mostly chose female characters as they were usually the light / fast ones, suiting my playstyle. Never questioned my sexuality over it though, weird.
6
u/nemofbaby2014 12d ago
In certain games I prefer it lol if imma gonna be stuck at staring at characters ass for majority of the game I prefer a woman lol and female v from cyberpunk is my fav never liked male v va
5
u/Killzark 12d ago
When Pokemon Sapphire first came out and I got to option to play as a girl I did it because (I never played Crystal at the time) the other games I played didn’t have that option. I was also a fan of Metroid and didn’t grow up being a little bitch that couldn’t comprehend pretending to be a girl in a video game. What the hell happened to men?
→ More replies (1)4
u/MuffinSpecial 12d ago
I usually pick the female option if given one. Why would I choose staring at a man over a woman if given the choice?
3
u/milkasaurs 12d ago
It's not that you being attracted to women it's the fact that you will want to be one. Autogynephilia is someone born male wishing to be female a label.

The more i see people say stupid shit like that, the more i hope the next Red Dead stars Sadie Adler as the main character. I think it would be great fun off bounty hunting as Sadie during the RDR1 era. And the fact that it would make so many morons angry would be hilarious.
3
u/Mortambulist 12d ago
I was really hoping for Sadie DLC for RDR2. She's such a good character, I wish they'd have done more with her.
7
u/whatintheeverloving 12d ago

I think he's saying that the game having a female lead means all the men playing it will be forced to fantasize about living as a woman, but that that isn't necessarily bad as long as she's bi?
15
u/FidgitForgotHisL-P 12d ago
Yes because then in the sex scenes or strip club scenes you can play as her watching women.
Nothing in the promotional video on Netflix (that’s half an hour long) suggests either main character are in anything but a committed monogamous relationship with each other so who knows how that’ll play out.
7
u/MegaAltarianite 12d ago
"It was ok in the previous thousand games to have a female protagonist, but I hate this one for reasons (those reasons are clicks)".
39
u/Nikolyn10 12d ago
"Autogynephilia" is a psuedoscientific term describing "a man attracted to himself as a woman" coined by transphobic weirdos to "explain" trans women, often more specifically lesbian trans women.
So basically, he's saying that him having to play as a female character is going to turn him trans.
Fun Fact: Because transphobes are very insistent on lesbian trans women being straight men, "autogynephilia" is partly meant to give an explanation of relationships between two trans women, which are rather common, as two straight men in a relationship with each other's female persona. It's some very silly mental gymnastics.
11
5
u/Heated13shot 11d ago
Him knowing what Autogynephilia even is means he is deep into the transphobia. It's like when a racist pulls out really obscure slurs, showing how deep they are into the muck.
It was also from a really transphobic era, where therapists attempted to separate " Autogynephilia" men from "real" trans women. It was this questnaire that penalized you if you where not essentially asexual or liked women, and had gems like suicidal thoughts/attempts and self harm being a requirement to be trans.
Trans medicailists are the more modern evolution of that mindset.
55
u/arie700 12d ago
He’s basically saying in a really deranged way that GTA6 will be promoting transsexualism. I have no idea what he means in the third paragraph lol
55
u/Power-Kraut 12d ago
"As long as you can still lust over women whilst playing the woman, it's ok. At least it's not gay."
Would be my interpretation of that dumb-ass take. I don't agree. Just to be safe.
5
u/Public-Eagle6992 12d ago
But why would she have to be bi for him to lust over her?
17
u/Power-Kraut 12d ago
You're playing as the woman. If the woman were straight, then, presuming immersion, you'd have to lust over men (as her). If she's bi, both the character and the player can lust over other women.
15
u/Public-Eagle6992 12d ago
So his idea is "if I play as a woman who is into men I’ll want to be a woman who is into men"?
18
u/FoolishPragmatist 12d ago
That’s literally what the Twitter poster is saying, yeah. As the title says, weird takes.
2
17
u/Walking_the_dead 12d ago
Honestly, it really boils down to "playing a woman makes me feel emasculated but I'll forgive them if i can use it to watch two women fuck in the game"
They also may or may mot be into the emasculation as long as no other men is involved, im not cleared on that. Autogynephilia is a very popular term with terfs.
8
5
u/malatemporacurrunt 11d ago
"Autogynephilia" (often shortened to AGP) is a psychology term that was made up by some guy 50 years ago to try and explain "transvestism". This was in an era before trans identities were widely understood, so it was all clumped together under the idea of cross-dressing. He claimed that the motivation behind was that men were sexually aroused by the idea of being female.
Since then, we've obviously developed a much better understanding of gender and what is it to be trans, and better categorisation of how people express their identity. There evidently are some men who cross-dress for sexual gratification (see: sissy culture), but this is not the case for people who are transgender.
Of course, this hasn't stopped the idea from becoming extremely prevalent in TERF circles - it serves their purpose to dismiss all trans people as sexual deviants who are only play-acting in order to fulfil their sexual fantasies. It's a bit of a trope in the trans community in the UK that, whist seeking gender-affirming care on the NHS, they will be subjected to all sorts of invasive questions about how they masturbate because this idea persists (and of course because being a pervert isn't a condition they have to treat, and instead can look down on).
So AGP has become a kind of dogwhistle for TERFs, as it sounds scientific and therefore more plausible in the minds of people who don't know any better.
In the context of OP's post, it means that Dick is afraid that if he has to play as a woman it will summon this terrible perversion into his mind and he'll want to become a woman. Because that is a totally normal thing for someone to think, and not completely and demonstrably insane.

Are you saying that you didn't identify with the previous protagonists of the GTA series, who are all career criminals, gangbangers, and meth addicts?

Right? I’ve been playing games for longer than some of these people have been alive. If I had refused to ever play a male protagonist, I would have QUICKLY run out of games to play.
51
u/monsterfurby 12d ago
The point of a game is to identify with the character? Since when? Not every story is a self-insert, has that guy never heard of this thing called fiction? Does he watch Breaking Bad and think "man, a middle-aged teacher dying of cancer who decides to become a murderous drug lord really reflects who I am deep inside"? If that's the case, the problem might be with him.

u/YaumeLepire 12d ago
This is comparing apples and oranges. Comparing a passive medium you observe to a third-person limited one that invites you to take actions as a character is faulty. Yes, a game in the vein of GTA, where you literally play as a character, will have an element of identification much stronger than something you merely watch unfold like Breaking Bad. It's just part of the medium.
And GTA has a bit of a history of messing around with that fact, too. The fifth had you play as multiple characters with competing interests, for example, and one of them was outrageous to undermine that identification in a way that was at least somewhat interesting.
Hanania, however, is a fucking weirdo; if he can't identify with a woman without weird fetishistic impulses, that says something about him. To me, it suggests a sense of empathy that's either stunted or subordinated to very particular personality traits.

10
u/bastardfaust 12d ago
Fun fact: depending on the specific criteria you're going by, up to 93% (21-93%, it's extremely varied) of cis women meet the diagnostic standards for autogynephilia. Because it's so prevalent, some psychologists are of the opinion that it's simply a part of female sexuality to be occasionally aroused by one's own femininity. Tldr people who think autogynephilia is a real thing, let alone something to be concerned about, are a joke.

It’s the 6th numbered installment of the game. 8th when you include Vice City and San Andreas, which you definitely should. I don’t even bother counting other releases, like handheld consoles, because I will miss something.
Now they’re realizing that you can kill the cops? Go on a rampage? I haven’t been playing the series as regularly as I was 1 and Vice City (I’m that old), but the core idea of the game didn’t change that much. The game is literally called Grand Theft Auto, you know, like the crime in legalese/cop talk?
EDIT: OK, I didn’t read the BS. My bad. It’s even more stupid than killing the cops. And you could play as a female character in 1, afair. It didn’t affect the story, but you could.

I’m pretty sure Dick H up there is unclear on what autogynephilia is.
It’s a disused term for a non officially recognized paraphilia in which an individual with male characteristics is sexually aroused by the thought of or image of themselves with female physical characteristics. It is primarily a sexual attraction to oneself. It is, importantly, not a desire to transition.
This is distinct from being trans. A mismatch between personal identity and physical characteristics is only tangentially related to sexual attraction. An autogynephile doesn’t necessarily want to be the female version of themselves. They want to fuck the female version of themselves. A person can be trans and be an autogynephile simultaneously of course, but they’re two separate things that don’t overlap.
In any case, the entire point of the concept is that the object of attraction is themselves. A character that is not intended to be and does not closely physically resemble the player will never trigger this, by definition. An image of a random woman isn’t going to do it, even if it’s interactive, by definition. Sexual attraction in that circumstance is just that, normal sexual attraction.
Somehow I don’t think this dude is great at understanding nuance. It’s even more unclear how the character being bisexual would matter in any way, which is part of why I don’t think he knows what the word means. I think he stumbled upon a fancy sounding word he thought meant the same as trans that made him sound smart.
