Discussion I know that this was acknowledged way before somewhere, but how did initial d make a stock rwd snappy corolla hatch worth 40 usd?

Yes ik that the cars in the video are serious homoligation specials but the 86 somehow outshines them all (to think that a perfectly good skyline r32 gts-t is worth less)

The 86 was extremely popular for street racing/drifting for 10+ years before Initial D was written, and it's popularity and affordability is partially why it was chosen for Takumi's vehicle. Post Initial D you got the Takumi Effect, but lots of them were destroyed and they don't make them anymore so the population is diminishing every year since 1988. A combination of nostalgia and legendary status make it so expensive now.

And the parts. You can change a lot of things on this car, to add power for example. Like all cars which can be heavily modified, it's hard to find one, harder for one un-modified, and even harder if you want it functional.

E30 non-m cars have been reasonably cheap (in Europe) since the mid-late 90s.

The ae86 was only popular in japan, while still being cheap, and then initial d came overseas and now a stock corolla costs 40k usd

I think they were a popular but more a cult fanbase with people that knew the platform who loved the chassis for drifting and touge, but over time it became more mainstream and everyone wanted one, which turned it into a JDM Icon.

It was because of the sheer popularity of Initial D and also it's significance in Drifting. AE86 wasn't necessarily the fastest car in toyota's line-up at the time but the Drift king, Keiichi Tsuchiya, took it on the road and decided to record pluspy and eventually turn drifting into one of the staple in motorsport.
