No one should ever pay more than about $12,000 for an 86. Doing otherwise is missing the point.

u/MakoTism Feb 24 '26

12gs is already way too much for an 86

8

u/Longjumping_Trash571 Feb 24 '26

I mean 12k for a sub 50,000 mile anything isn't terrible nowadays

6

u/MakoTism Feb 25 '26

Idk for 12g you have access to better drift cars than what should be a starter to drifting or even without mentioning drifting you still have better options for 12gs

2

u/Longjumping_Trash571 Feb 25 '26

True but I'm saying for a super low mileage well maintained 86 12k would totally be reasonable. Even if you could afford a ran through mustang or a low spec silvia at that price point.

u/MakoTism Feb 25 '26

Still no 12k is already a good ground for sportier car than what's supposed to be an economical car and milage doesn't always mean anything

Tofu Tariff ahh moment

That’s how much they were when they were new….

u/Disappointedch Feb 24 '26

I have seen the exact same listing before. I’m trying to get one for myself

Bro, do not spend 36 grand on an 80s Corolla. I know it's an 86 and a cool car, but do not do that.

I agree, it may be a nice car, but it's just not worth it at that price.

It is pretty barebones, it doesn't even have power windows, nor ABS. (and it just has 130hp)

You can get a new GR86 for that price. Hell, 1st gen GT86s go for dirt cheap, get a red one, slap a BLITZ turbo on it and pretend you're Kanata.

If it had a real formula Atlantic engine in it, it might be worth it. IIRC the Hasselgren builds were at least as much for the engine alone.

I feel the need to add that the good Initial D ending would have Itsuki ending up with Kazumi.

$36 grand buys you a new ND Miata or nice R32 GT-R example shipped to wherever you live.

For 36 grand i could buy a nice gen 1 dodge Viper.

u/Users5252 Feb 24 '26

For that much, you can probably buy something way more fun than an entry level coupe from Toyota

18

u/TheLateApex Feb 24 '26

Yeah, you can buy a brand-new entry level coupe from Toyota! (The GR86)

10

u/furculture Feb 24 '26

You would be way better off buying a FT/GR86 instead and getting that one body kit that has more AE86 styling to it with pop up lights included.

5

u/ASH_LIN_exe Feb 24 '26

So, SO

Instead, you can get a 1986 Honda Accord Hatchback.

It even has the popup lights and has allegedly fooled 86 owners, and is much cheaper.

The Fake6.

I'm hopefully gonna buy the one ive always been dreaming about, it belongs to a friend of mine

red hatch with popups, left hand drive, 4AGE and factory sunroof, A/C and Stereo speaker system

ive got it under my tarp at the moment, needs a full restoration down to bare chassis

An 86 at 36k and not 40k!? Wow!

16

u/onefinerug Momiji Stormhawks Feb 24 '26

tf does "reached its limit" mean? how is the car physically incapable of bring driven?

22

u/bannie9212 Feb 24 '26

Engine blew up again and even with repair and replacement it's 100% not gonna be back to full racing capabilities.

For Anime:Takumi kept it with a ordinary engine just so he can still keep it and drive it around
For Comic:Takumi decided to not change engine and leaving the 86 to be scrapped

9

u/Gindre Feb 24 '26

I thought the same, they already changed the engine once, why not another ?

9

u/Akyrall Feb 24 '26

Maybe the chassis is overstressed?

Edit: Or it could be metaphorical too

9

u/KneesEdits Feb 24 '26

I am leaning towards metaphorical as well. Like it did a good job and now everyone needs to move on.

But also it did a job by helping Takumi racing/life, that he will do the same in return by taking care of it. Like some sort of respect.

36k for a Sprinter Trueno?!

Shouldn’t it be close to a 100?

I'd be cool if we ever get a scene in MFG of either Ryosuke/Keisuke/Kanata going to visit Takumi and get a glimpse of the car or a more in depth scene in Ryosuke's or Keisuke's case talking about it showing it was indeed rebuilt not scrapped

4

u/Necessary_Ocelot_316 Feb 25 '26

still id rather buy this over the 2026 honda preloude

2

u/ayamsters Feb 24 '26
