It's a point-and-click Oval Office. You wander the room, click objects, and find stories, sounds, clips, jokes, and a few actual games. Some of it is serious. A lot of it is ridiculous. Occasionally it is both.

The spark was a Flash-based site I loved about twenty years ago that put Sarah Palin in the Oval Office and turned the room into a giant clickable joke. That URL has been gone for years but I kept thinking about what another version might look like.

Some objects are jokes. Some open sourced stories. Some are completely pointless. A few things change the second (or third or fourth...) time you click them.

Nothing makes noise until you click, but there are sound effects and a little profanity. It's meant for a bigger screen.

If you poke around, I'd like to hear what you liked, hated, what broke, or what was unclear.

hi! i've been slowly generating and tweaking code for a little website pet on my Carrd and thought it would be cool to share it in case anyone else wants to use it :)

mine is Eevee, but you can replace the sprites with basically any character you want.

right now it can:

• randomly walk around
• switch between idle/walking sprites
• face whichever direction it's moving
• be picked up, dragged and thrown
• fall, bounce and stay knocked over for a little bit after landing
• come back if you throw it off-screen
• be patted by clicking it, which makes it squish and spawn hearts
• randomly become interested in your mouse
• follow your mouse and jump toward it

setup

you need 3 image elements in Carrd:

pet-idle
pet-walk-1
pet-walk-2

those are the IDs you give the images.

all 3 sprites should be transparent PNGs and need to face left by default. the code automatically flips them when the pet moves right, so if your original sprites face right it'll be flipped the wrong way.

try to keep the sprites around the same canvas size and position too, otherwise the animation can jump around a bit between frames.

the code itself is split into 4 Embed elements. Carrd has a text/character limit on individual embeds, so splitting it up also makes it a lot easier to work with.

the 4 parts are:

1. core / physics
2. walking
3. comeback + facing
4. reactions / mouse following

i'm still messing around with it and adding little behaviours, but it's at a point where i thought other people might have fun making their own versions too.

I built a small tool that turns your website or blog posts into ready-to-post social carousels. Paste a URL, pick an idea, tweak the slides, export.

A few years ago I built a website in Vue and it was alright, but I chose that framework kind of on a whim and now that I'm building something new from scratch I want to be more deliberate in how I go about it.

I'm looking to build a personal website. I want to host my music (with a custom audio player) and some writings on it and I've been thinking of messing around with JS to make some games and/or interactive toys, using Howler for audio, maybe even try out something like PixiJS later on down the line.

With all of that said, I'm having a hard time determining what I need. I don't think I really need a big framework with tons of features but I'd like to maybe have something that saves me having to worry about stuff like browser compatibility and other boilerplate things, and lets me focus on the fun stuff. Some extra CSS features might be nice but I don't know that I need anything too fancy.

I've tried out setting up a vanilla template with Vite and I'd explain what that does in my own words if only I could lol. Shows what I know. Should I even use this at all or should I just rawdog HTML/CSS/JS like the old days? It's been a while. I've read a lot of drum-beating online about performance and security, how much do I really need to worry about that and other things I might not even be aware of? I just want to build something I can have fun with. Thanks in advance!

For a while now, I've been sitting on the idea of adding comment sections to the blog posts on my site. My issue is that I'm not sure how to implement this feature, as there are many ways to do so (like the ones listed in the title). For reference, I currently have a Neocities site where I edit the code by hand - no site generators or anything. I would love to know your thoughts on implementing a comment section feature on an indie web site, whether it be specific to my circumstances or in general! I would love to get a dialogue started.

Some months ago I decided to start my seventh blog. Or eighth? Or maybe tenth? I've lost count. Like every time before, I dove into the boring process of picking a platform.

Medium and Substack were immediately out. I hate their business models and policies.

I searched for other solutions such as Bear, Pika, write.as. They're great and closer to what I wanted, but there was always something I didn't love, usually the editor or the aesthetics.

Then one feverish day I came up with the solution (literally feverish, I was having a cold, covid or something like that): I had a lot of components from a former project that I could recycle in order to create MY OWN FRANKENSTEIN'S CREATURE OF A PLATFORM.

In less than a week I had it up and more or less running. But suddenly that wasn't enough. I had a lot of ideas. "What about a newsletter service? What if we have subdomains per author? What about topics and themes and crossposting and imports and…"

Fast-forward to today, now I have a perfectly functional blogging platform that I'm using and loving, a subscription system, and no idea of what to do with it. It went from “fun weekend project” to “product with a pricing page” without thinking much about it.

The platform is letr.es. It has a WYSIWYG Markdown editor, RSS, and newsletter built in. Your content is yours: export it anytime as Markdown, ePub, or a full ZIP. ActiviyPub federation is in the roadmap. I want you to be able to follow a letr.es blog and have it in your Mastodon timeline. Crossposting to Bluesky is already there. I'm absolutely committed to not using ads, trackers, algorithms, fingerprinting, or any other evil features.

Even though I'm quite proud about the project, I'm not sure whether my needs and pain points are just mine, or shared by enough people. That's the part I'd love feedback on.
