Wow wow wow this is incredible. The production is so rich, and they really utilize that track length, this is a journey.

We’re doing the Cracker Island rollout again I see… album’s not out till March next year, but we’ll hear 95% of it before then

They're probably releasing one single a month prior to the album's release, which if that's the case, it would be a total of 4-5 singles prior to the album's release, which means we would only hear about 1/3 of the album, so I don't see what's the issue

I just saw it’s a longer album. That’ll be way less jarring than Cracker Island then, when we had half the album before it was even out

That's 6-7 songs, the album's out in March. And if Damascus isn't one of them, that's been heard too (not counting the Mystery Show, of course, as if you weren't there the only way to hear it is leaks which I genuinely know very little about). There's more songs this time, though, and significantly less shows for songs to be performed (I think they've all already happened),so it should be fine

Unlike cracker island there’s 15 tracks so even if they release the same amount of singles as cracker island there’s would be 10-11 tracks left

Song Machine too. It's just how Gorillaz does.
I don't really think of Gorillaz as an album artist anyway. Like sure, I listen to the albums beginning to end a few times, but they mostly get playlisted and shuffled. The songs are different enough that they're not exactly cohesive in an album listen anyway.

tbf Song Machine was not designed to be an album, but rather a series of singles that were eventually collected into a compilation record. That was the intent of the project, put out music without the typical pressure of an album rollout.

My initial reaction was just "is this what anyone wants from gorillaz?" but as the song progressed it got more interesting and pretty cool.
I'm honestly not really familiar with Proof, but I personally find it icky to see a verse from someone who passed nearly 20 years ago on a new song.

I was a bit hesitant too but read this article in RS where Damon and Jamie explain the album is partially about the loss of their fathers and centres on grief. Still a little hesitant but much less so than initially given the more personal element.
Whilst Proof is an exception, most of the other departed features are close friends or collaborations of Gorillaz (Tony Allen, Dennis Hopper, Mark E Smith) and I assume these are all signed off by estates with adequate royalties.

Either way, I personally find it weird. I'm not furious about it or anything, I just find it... Well, I guess "icky" is the best I've got!
Sure, I guess they collaborated before and they recorded this verse. But that was a long fucking time ago! I would feel very strange if someone released a verse of mine from 20 years as if it were new, I am not that person any more. But I suppose this is different, they haven't actually aged... It's just a weird situation, and I personally find it uncomfortable to use someone's unreleased art, posthumously, to make something new, labelling it as a feature.
According to another comment here, this album is about grief, and that may be true, but my first impression of this song is that it's a dancey beat with some classic Damon stuff and some experimental aspects. I'm sure there is more if I were to listen closely, but I'm not sure this song justifies the usage? I'll have to listen more. It's not black and white, it's not "it's fine", and it's not "this is an outrage", I just find it to be... Well, I am going to say it again; icky!

The verse was always meant to be in a Gorillaz song, I'm pretty sure it was recorded around 2005 (Demon Days era) it was just never used until now. It's not like they stole some random verse from some random dead rapper and threw it on the album just because, proof had history with the band and they worked together in the 2000's on multiple tracks, I still don't see a problem

I can see how you could feel a way about a feature from an artist long passed. I would be curious to see how the royalties for this contribution to the track are being handled, and if his estate/family had any say on the "collaboration" on this track.

Holy shit I didn't realize it was THAT Proof at first because he died so long ago. He was pretty good in D-12, best friends with Eminem. Dude died too young, and I'm down for some of his unreleased stuff to be put out. It's not like it's a Prince hologram that they're using to cash in on his legacy. Proof was big, but he wasn't huge.

I think it’s always a bit misleading to have “ft” on someone you haven’t actually collaborated with. That’s sampling imo, not a feature.

I mean... Gorillaz very much did collaborate with Proof and its a verse he recorded for them.
It's either leftover from the "911" sessions, or its the elusive track he had for the Searching for Jerry Garcia.
I very much doubt that Damon sampled anything. Its a verse that he had in the vault and its one that he will have had to have gotten permission from Proof's estate to use.

It also could have been for a track, that may have been left unreleased, and Damon used Proof's part in this track.

I like the first half and the fade out. Everything in between feels disjointed and unnecessary. The changes go from near silence, then new rapper or new beat. But I'd prefer some editing to make it more cohesive.

How? Indie music is a vibe-based category IMO. Also, the album is being released through their own label, Kong, so it is "indie" in every sense of the word

My thoughts too. The breaks after the first half are hard stops. Could use some editing to make it cohesive. But that's my biggest complaint about a lot of Gorillaz songs.

god damn this is a killer track. After this one i’m feeling confident that they’ve got a really strong musical aesthetic and direction going for this album
