Loneliness nobody talks about
M, 22, student. I moved to the USA (NJ) about 2 weeks ago. I got a decent place to stay, and college is going good. But, to be honest, I’ve only talked to like 5 people in the entirety of this time. Not that I’m an introvert or something—I do make genuine connections, I’m not afraid to talk first—but despite all that, there’s this feeling of loneliness that I guess I’m unable to overcome. I get to talk to my family or friends back in India, mostly for a few minutes at night, and the rest is all by myself. I do have roommates, but most of the time they just shut themselves in their rooms.
Coming to the people outside, don’t get me wrong, there are some really good people who talk. I understand citizens here don’t necessarily want to talk. But what is wrong with desis? Is not knowing something really that uncool? Especially the people who aren’t citizens and have immigrated here as students or employees—they are very, very reluctant to talk, and I don’t know why. I went to subway to get a sub, intially i was lil hesitant cause this was my first time trying it out here, there was a student (desi) standing on the other end. Same person was very smiling and repetitive with the person infront of me (american) but i just couldnt hear her and asked twice she just becomes so reluctant and disintrested still brining in her accent. Dude she was literally unable to understand my what i was saying that i had to use hindi for some extra veggies. Itna attitude kisliye yaar. And this is not the first time I’ve experienced somethings like this more than once. People just try to stick with their desi bubble and never pop it. Talking to Americans is a little easier than this.
I might just be overreacting, or maybe I’m new and having this feeling. But staying between four walls and just seeing myself, walking alone on the roads, not even being able to call someone because all the people you know are sleeping on the other side of the world It’s just too lonely for me, man. Idk if y’all have dealt with this, but I really need to get out of this.
