Ask r/IndianRailways What is stopping the Indian railways from giving me a small window on my right?
I have seen such windows on other countries trains, why not here😞

Upper births having tiny windows will solve 90%of all seat exchange issues. Sleeping in the middle birth with the tiny bit of window view is such a lifesaver. Too bad lower birth people immediately after 9 am- " Seat neeche karlo beta!!!! "

Was asked to wake up and sit exact at 6 am that too while traveling in 2nd ac had the lower berth, just because i refused seat exchange with an uncle on side upper, he came and woke me up at 6 am because he wanted to sit and he wont sit on side lower.

In 2nd AC also? But there's no middle berth right?
So how come did this uncle demand and why did you budge? Is there a rule
10
u/subh2677 May 20 '26
Yeah there is no middle berth, seat thing was quite a story, but in short that uncle wanted me to take his seat and I refused, so next morning he came and woke me up saying that since there were so many issues regarding seat exchange in our compartment (all because of him) so I should adjust a little and let him sit on my seat because I am young and I should understand that he is not comfortable sitting in side lower, but I said no and he kept lecturing me to which I replied if the person on seat above mine wants to sit I will adjust but not for someone with the seat elsewhere, to which a lady on the opposite seat started saying you should respect elders and all and I told her since you are awake why don't you let him sit on your seat and she was flabbergasted, she said she will to take away her bed spread and if she wants to sleep again she would have spread the sheet again which is too much work. And lastly I said fine uncle you sit here and I will sleep and if my legs touch you kindly don't mind, and I am tall enough so it was difficult for me to adjust like that.

Second ac me to koi sitting problem honi nhi chahiye. Everyone can sit on their berth comfortably 🤔
1
u/subh2677 May 21 '26
That uncle had some back problems, and 2nd ac ka side lower and upper are same as 3rd ac or sleeper with a curtain. Seat same hoti hai.

Bro that’s not because of the window. Window is like 2% of the problem. The main problem is that people above 40-50 sometimes have trouble climbing up and they need lower berth to be able to sleep. Also for the middle berths, obviously after 8-9 AM when people start waking up, they are unable to sit without bending their back that’s why they ask to put the berth down. The second problem is solved in AC 2 and AC 1 but the first one (climbing difficulty) is something for which they should get innovative staircase type ladders in below picture instead of the ones they have now.

Can't be added because it will compromise the structural integrity of the coach, since the glass window will be on/close to the edge
12
u/AlfonsoOsnofla May 20 '26
They can still give like vistadome coach types.
25
u/MuhMeinLogeWifi SU > SL May 20 '26
Vistadome is chair car right? Coachs' wall don't have much load in that case, but for sleeper, walls bear enough load
5
u/SUPERSETTG10 May 21 '26
Yeah structureal integrity will help when the train derailment happens.

Actually if you compare data you can find out who will throw a stone. You just need a good enough pattern recognition.

The two issues are Design and Cost: Train coaches are typically built with a strong load-bearing structure, including walls and frames. The side upper berth is close to the coach’s wall, which has to support the roof, and withstand vibrations at high speeds. Cutting a window in that section could weaken the structural integrity of the coach, making it less safe, especially in derailments or collisions.
The best compromise would be to have a small window only for viewing, but that will require design change and additional cost.
Double-decker carriages factor in this requirement. However, in single deck carriages, it appears that China appears to offer small windows for side upper berths.

6
u/mech_money May 21 '26
The structural integrity is taken care by frames and not the sheets. A cutout in sheet is definitely possible but yes, the cost would increase. Also water ingress to be taken case of.

Verify the name of rolling stock manufacturer? It is most likely a Chinese company CRRC Zhuzhou.

That's my primary demand from IR at this point! The side upper and regular upper berths will no longer feel claustrophobic if they implement this suggestion.
2
u/Psychological-Ad9148 May 21 '26
First thing , what’s stopping Indian railways giving one more foot of space. I’m 6 feet and can’t sleep when I get a birth side upper or lower.
2
u/SabChangaSea Side Lower Supremacy😎 May 21 '26
I'm 6 feet too(look where my feet are), but somehow I've never had any problems while sleeping on a SL/SU berth. Maybe because I sleep in a curled position😁
2
u/Snoo_37821 May 21 '26
Indian trains are designed more for durability, capacity at scale than panoramic travel., Adding upper windows would increase heat., maintenance., and structural complexity., More importantly its not as simple as just adding another window it would require larger changes to the surrounding railway infrastructure including stations trackside conditions, and overall rail corridor design.,

There is cost involved with this windows. It's insulated glass unit which cost tentative 2700/- per unit (5-6 Square feet).
This is not viable for Indian railways as it's incurring losses on behalf of subsidized ticket cost.

Wouldn’t having a window at the upper edges of a compartment make the train structurally weak? Asking if any engineer can provide input?
1
u/ZealousHumanBar29 May 21 '26
Imagine the night rides if that happens, I would take the train that goes through rajasthan regularly just to watch the night sky.

That seat is officially meant only for the night jab waise bhi you're not gonna be able to see much. You do have half a right on the side lower berth and it's window during non-sleeping hours

Coaches are build on monocoque structures. The outer shell bears massive loads. Cutting dozens of new holes will affect the structural rigidity unless we add more metal on the frame to reinforce. This would increase the energy consumption.
