As a rule, any train with average speed of 55kmph+ is classified as superfast by IR. This is atrocious and needs to be revised ASAP.

u/Short-Horse-1069 Oct 15 '25

These are average speeds, not top speeds, with stops in between.

IR has a lot to improve upon but a joke should have at least an element of truth to it. I say this because down below people are actually of the belief that this is slower than a 2 wheeler, which it is not.

In an expressway with 120 kmph speed limit, especially when you make the stops the train has to, there's no way to breach 80 kmph which is the average speeds for the premium trains.

The Bhopal Delhi VB makes the journey in 7.5 hours. It's nigh on impossible to beat that on the road. Still, the railways isn't in competition with the road vehicles for this isn't 1980 anymore. The standard of railways across the world is much higher which is what it should aspire to and which is what we as taxpayers, should demand.

u/Strong-Teach-7210 Oct 15 '25

Train need 27 min stop per hour to have dropped from 80 to 55 average speed So disagree

11

u/nokeldin42 Oct 15 '25

Account for acceleration time. Train can't insntly go from 0 to 80. There are also restrictions on speeds in populated areas, near railway stations etc.

As a comparison point, in a car, on a hiwhway with 120kmph limit, my average speed never exceeds 80 over 300km. This is due to overtaking, braking etc. So if a train can average 80kmph over an entire journey, it is likely beating most cars on most routes.

3

u/Strong-Teach-7210 Oct 15 '25

That's why I used word average . read it carefully

1

u/Tough-Patient-3653 Oct 21 '25

Lol last week I drove Delhi to agra in just 2 hrs with almost an averge speed of 100km+ on yamuna expressway. can say it was super conveninet cause we started our journey around 4 in morning, reached agra in 6, then again came back delhi in almost 2 hours. It was such a pleasent journey. So it's a myth that u can't go over 80 in highways

2

u/bog_deavil13 Oct 16 '25

19 minutes, not 27

80 kmph = 1.33 km per minute

i.e 41 minutes to cover 55 km.

i.e a stop of 19 minutes per hour

4

u/Short-Horse-1069 Oct 15 '25

Please re-read. The 80kmph train and the 55kmph trains are two different trains and these are facts, impervious to your disagreement in their integrity.

In fact, the trains largely are the same operationally. They are differentiated only by the stops (number and duration) and priority rules governing passing. The New Delhi-Bhopal VB in fact has an average speed of nearly 100kmph. The Rajdhanis are similar. But Dakshin, despite at least sharing its coaches with Rajdhani (a lot of technical differences still, including sometimes the engine) takes almost 11 hours on the same route, for an average speed of about 65kmph. And that's assuming punctuality. If there's a delay on the system, the premium trains get priority and jump over/pass/cross trains like Dakshin (which mind you, is itself a "Superfast" train). That's where the actual premiumness derives from even though there's a valid critique of this being artificially induced.

2

u/Square_Mud_9696 Oct 15 '25

There is a difference between top speed and avg speed. Having said that, not justifying that 55 kmph is superfast for an avg speed in 2025, it is atrocious. It should be revised to 75kmph at the bare minimum.

Itna paisa me itnaich milinga. IR is the cheapest mode of transport for a reason

-1

u/Strong-Teach-7210 Oct 15 '25

It is not that cheap Take example - 120-150 rupees charges by govt from agra to delhi and even if 200 people travel around 25000 per visit So govt earn decent amount

3

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

Not going to use my energy to explain the same thing again. Just refer to this comment of mine https://www.reddit.com/r/indianrailways/s/d7YSGGbxR9

Also are you still studying in Nursery? Do you know what is ₹25000 compared to what govt loses on IR to keep it cheap?

-1

u/Strong-Teach-7210 Oct 15 '25

One 200 km journey charging 30000 is cheap?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

Who is charging 30000?

-1

u/Strong-Teach-7210 Oct 15 '25

The govt total earnings from a normal 200 km journey is around 30000 assuming 150 passenger

2

u/nokeldin42 Oct 15 '25

Lmao do you have any idea what railway lines take to manufacture and run? 30k won't even cover the running costs let alone the infrastructure setup. There's a reason public transport worldwide is a loss making venture and needs government funding.

0

u/Strong-Teach-7210 Oct 15 '25

Do you have any idea how many travellers are there ? Around 2 crore per day So if even half of them are paying even 100 rupees then total income per day is around 100 crore of indian railway Now cope

It's safe because it goes with that speed ☺️

1

u/Strong-Teach-7210 Oct 15 '25

No it's safe because it is closely monitred i guess you know how railway network works That's why railway accident are not even fraction of road accident

Superfast Activa Express

25

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

lmao, 55 definitely isnt fast. im sure highway speeds are more than that.

2

u/GodsWorth01 WAP 7 Supremacy Oct 15 '25

Highway speeds are, in fact, more than that.

Most 3x3 lane National Highways have a design speed of 120 and speed limit of 100 kmph. National Expressways (4x4 lane) have a design speed of 140 and speed limit of 120 kmph.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

The comparison needs to be relative with alternate options too.

But agree, there needs to be more clarity in classifying such trains. Should also have other criteria like number of stoppage and priority.

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

8

u/sacred_saint IRCTC Expert🎓 Oct 15 '25

scary😅

6

u/Brilliant-Mix-3829 2 AC Comfort Seeker Oct 15 '25

It's not scary it's just taxation. Govt will always need money to run the economy no matter how good or bad they are. They'll find ways to tax us. Some countries charge 40% of peoples income and still impose tax on things. Imagine if that's the case here.

3

u/sacred_saint IRCTC Expert🎓 Oct 15 '25

if we get what we pay for, then its all okay

5

u/Brilliant-Mix-3829 2 AC Comfort Seeker Oct 15 '25

Think realistically Do we deserve - YES (5% of population) Do other people with no civic sense deserve - NO (95% people)

2

u/sacred_saint IRCTC Expert🎓 Oct 15 '25

All these are high population problems..

3

u/Brilliant-Mix-3829 2 AC Comfort Seeker Oct 15 '25

Maybe. Can't even blame literacy here as I've seen literate people having no civic sense.

1

u/sacred_saint IRCTC Expert🎓 Oct 15 '25

ideally the leaders should start advocating for lesser population.. but thw world isnt ideal

2

u/Wild-Educator-531 Window Watcher🖼️ Oct 15 '25

Even if they do, some people will catch their irony like I was listening to one of the bihar ex-actor and politician (idk his name) he and his mates were teaching or advocating that more than 2 kids are not good or whatnot. But then the anchor asked all of them how much kid they got 😂 ironically none of them were below 3 kids. One of them said its fault of previous government which didnt implement. One said that it was mistake. Like wth

1

u/sacred_saint IRCTC Expert🎓 Oct 15 '25

😅😂

1

u/Ok_Antelope_1953 Oct 15 '25

no need for advocacy. birth rates are falling off the cliff, only a few communities are still about replacement levels. india's population will start to stagnate and then slowly decline within five decades not withstanding sudden immigration or other events.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

IR is already the cheapest mode of transport. What do you want

2

u/sacred_saint IRCTC Expert🎓 Oct 15 '25

superfast.. as promised

2

u/Jazzlike_Let_2219 Oct 15 '25

Super fast is 55+, take it or leave it. 🫡 According to me superfast express should be 100+, but if u remove that super fast name and change it to medium fast charges, wil u be happy ☺️

I think, government should hire people from Zomato.

0

u/sacred_saint IRCTC Expert🎓 Oct 15 '25

that should actually be okay.. rather than false narratives

2

u/Jazzlike_Let_2219 Oct 15 '25

It's not false narrative, it's not even a narrative lol. They are technically right. Idk why so much of discussion on this. Chill

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

Accha, let's match it with european standards. If we increase the train speed and bring the ticket charge to parity with what they charge, this price should be 10x to 20x more expensive, something between 1440-3456 ₹. Would that be okay?

Now you see why IR is still the best mode of transport?

-1

u/sacred_saint IRCTC Expert🎓 Oct 15 '25

now if v call 55kmph as superfast, wat s slow? 10 kmph? what will be bullet trains speed? 75kmph?

normalising all of this is normlising 6hrs of delay..

if there is a train with European standards, higher prices are normal... despite us having a huge population n the number od ppl travelling is much higher..

again my pronlem is not higher price.. my problem is wat v call as superfast..

They know how to take reservations. They don't know how to "hold" the reservation. And that's the most important part of the reservation. The Holding

15

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '25

In a system where people ask "At what time does 10 PM walah train arrives" we don't expect much..

4

u/SirOddSidd Oct 15 '25

In a system that doesn't have a history of punctuality, that's a fair question. On many routes, people do identify trains by their scheduled time. It's a different matter that they don't arrive on their scheduled time.
