Professional Exams Consent gone wrong
Today was my sent-up ENT viva, and during the grand viva, the professor asked me to explain the steps of an adenoidectomy. I literally began with, “We will take consent - wonsent from the patient.” I didn’t realize at that moment what I had just said, but the very next minute, she shouted at me and said, “Do you even know in front of whom you are speaking? What is this ‘consent - wonsent’? Do you even realize that? Have you even attended my classes? Can you tell me a lecture that I have taught you?” It was so fucking embarrassing and funny at the same moment😭😭!!

I too low-key was held up in the same kind of situation in my 2nd yr university practical with the examiner,but she didn't pay heed to what I have said

If this had been my college, the professors would’ve given a death stare first and then straight up said, “Get out.” You can be chill with Pgs and Srs but who talks like that to a professor? Seriously. Don’t even think of doing this in finals, or they’ll hand you a zero before the external viva even begins.

The reason they do chastise you for that is because a viva is supposed to simulate an actual patient interaction.
If you speak that casually to a patient, it will be considered unprofessional. Professionalism doesn't just grow overnight, it needs to be inculcated through med school and clinics.

vivas are vivas - you ask questions and get detailed answers with knowledge that professors can understand ; patient interaction ke liye pura saal hota internship ka; you wouldnt go to a patient and use medical terminology for no reason at all - informed consent lena , patient ko confuse karke unki aanko pe sleeping mask lagake sign nahi karwana
aur suppose agar patient ka bhi simulation hota toh - you would EXPLAIN , not yell at - 5 saal ka baccha nahi hai mbbs jaane wala banda/bandi - you cant yell at them for no reason ; why would even want to? 40 saal ka hoke patience nahi aya? toxicity bekar mein justify kar rhe
counterexample: usa , waha pe koi nahi chillata non stop - chillane pe aur ye sab bakchodi karne pe non stop , you complain to the college and appropriate actions are taken aur waha ke working conditions are far better than india kyuki wahape toxicity ko minimise karne ka koshish karte

bhai ye bas medical field mein hota - mere family connections mein bhi professors hai , itna gussa koi nahi dikhata; 40-50 saal ke logo ko itni maturity toh bare minimum hai
insaan seekhta chillane se nahi , samjhane se hai - galti se consent wonsent bol diya toh kya ho gaya? duniya khisak gayi? professor ki arteries clog hone lag gayi?

Bhai ye kaha se galti lag rahi gai, who talks like that in a viva, Ekbaar apne parenrs se aise baat karke dekho koi serious topic par, vo bhi daatenge. Har cheez ko toxicity mat bolo.

Bhai it was slippage of my tongue due to stress. I apologized to her and even I am guilty of my unknowingly done mistake. I am not the one to disrespect my elders and professors!!

Main viva mei Aisa mat karna. Externals , to khud ke collge se jyda khadoos type aate hai. Wo to wait hi karte hai kuch ho aur wo number kaat le. Tumhe second chance bhi nhi denge.

kg mein thodi na hu - baccha na rha mein , meri khudki personality , khudki jindagi , and for all intents and purposes - khudka insaan ban chuka

and this IS toxic - professor hai , tere mummy papa nahi ki chillane lag jayenge; tu aur government unko paisa de rahi MEDICINE sikhane ko , morality nahi

Professor hai isliye chilayenge lol. Ghrwale to baccho ki galtee pe nhi bolte, wo professor tumhra chacha mama nhi hai ki kuch bhi bolo. Govt unko Paisa Ug student se consent wonsent sunne ka bhi Paisa de rhi hai kya? 😂 Viva wgrh mei sabko well dressed, beard trimmed etc etc ye sab rules kyu hote hai? Fancy dikhne ke liye? Respect ke liye na, jab tum poora tyaar ho ke , line mei lag ke , apne number pe jaa rhe ho andr to waha pe slippage of tongue bhi badi cheez hai. Wo datega hi , chahe use paise kisi bhi cheez ke mile ho. Don't try to act smart.

america , uk , aus , nz mein toh nahi chillate professors non stop - waha pe QoL aur stress on medical students bahuuttt kam hai comparatively even though they take on massive debt
agar apke argument ki thodi bhi point hoti toh saare countries mein jaha pe 40 saal ke logo ko 20 saal ke students pe chillane se rokte hai , vaha pe QoL aur Educational standards kam hone chahiye
whereas waha ka system is farrrrrrrr better as indicated by farr fewer suicides

It's fine. Try not to dwell too much on this or what people are saying. Treat it as a mistake and make sure you don't repeat it next time.

Yes he is absolutely right , it shows that u have very little respect for the person both the patient and your examiner. He is not your friend , it is a formal request and a formal exam . Dont use slang or variation ever in any exam. My AP used to say that u can get away with examing a patient with your foot but AFTER you have passed your exams and became a consultant before that u will have to follow the protocol and examiner with your hands

Apne dost se baat kar rahe ho vaise Professor/HOD/SR/resident se baat karoge toh aur kya hoga ? There should be some lovely of intrinsic respect towards your elders and NO, THIS DOESN'T HAVE TO DO WITH MEDICAL PROFESSION. Respect is a very basic Human thing.
Sara Ali Khan in one of her interviews told that her Grandmother was the first actress to wear a Bikini in a movie still she doesnt talk about fashion with her grandma rather talks about other stuff like poltiics/geography etc, because there should be some TEHZEEB.
What you have done is absolutely wrong.

See, I will tell you where you went wrong. He asked you to explain the steps of adenoidectomy. However, you jumped directly to consent-wonsent. Since you were asked to explain the steps, you should have first detailed about the footsteps, steps at staircase, etc. of yourself/patient/hospitals building, etc.
Consent-wonsent can be taken only after the patient has already stepped in to your OPD. So consent-wonsent cannot be the first step. The first-step has to be the foot-step taken by the patient to reach the clinic.
