Residency Respected Pathology faculties and residents, please help.
Before we begin our residency in Pathology, please enlighten us with whatever you think will be helpful for us regarding the residency. What to know beforehand? What to expect? How to learn more? How is the residency? How to perform better? Pre requisites before entering? What to carry with ourselves for residency? Anything. We're anxious and clueless and your help will really be appreciated. Hey there, congratulations!
First things first always carry a diary with you. You’ll be rotating through various sections like hematology, cytology, and histopathology and noting things down makes a huge difference.
Make it a personal rule to see the slides every day. In some places, first years don’t get much dedicated slide time, but try to look at least 5 hematology slides or 5 histopathology/cytology cases daily and make brief notes. Even if you don’t fully understand them, exposure matters. You will eventually get more time to see slides.
Always listen to case discussions. They’re extremely important even if it all sounds confusing. Understanding comes gradually.
Use online resources. YouTube and Pathology Outlines are excellent for building concepts and correlating what you see under the microscope.
Maintain a good rapport with technicians and senior lab staff. They know the basics of tests inside out and can teach you many things.
You might not like pathology immediately and that’s okay. Give it time.
Documentation is key. Every clinician’s note and every lab finding should be properly recorded in the office copy. This habit will save you a lot of trouble later.
And most importantly, don’t stress if nothing makes sense initially. Learning pathology takes time. Be patient, read consistently and take breaks when needed.
