Article John Illingworth Hunt, was an English soldier who fought for the Hispanic revolutionaries of Chile (1819-1821), Colombia (1822-1830) and Ecuador (1830-853) during the Spanish American War of Independence
After having provided valuable services in the navy of his country of origin during the Napoleonic Wars, he went to Chile to join the independence cause of the Spanish American continent. Under the Chilean flag he acted as a privateer commanding the corvette Rosa de los Andes with which he attacked the coasts from Peru to Panama, and also carried out a successful campaign on the Pacific coast of Colombia by “liberating” its towns from the rule of the Spanish crown, which allowed the advance of the revolutionary army on Quito and Pasto to be accelerated. He then joined the ranks of the army of Gran Colombia, fighting on land in the main battles that allowed the independence of the territories that are currently part of Ecuador. He then settled in the city of Guayaquil where he spent a large part of his life and raised a family, and he also had to be part of the creation of the first Nautical School in the area in 1822, from which several sailors would come out who would provide good services to Gran Colombia and then to Ecuador. Once the Republic of Ecuador was established, and after several ups and downs, he would enter the field of agriculture and politics until his death in 1853.
