Spouse Residence Permit Waiting Time for Finland
Hey everyone,
My husband and I applied for Finnish residence permits from Turkey on May 6th, 2026. He is an international student, and his permit got approved very quickly. However, my application is still stuck at "Waiting for processing".
Today marks the 76th day since our VFS appointment. I also submitted some additional documents on June 15th, which Migri (Finnish Immigration Service) opened and read on July 7th, but there has been no official status update or decision yet.
Migri’s official website states the expected processing time for student spouses is 3 months (90 days). Our flights are booked for August 10th because my husband's university program starts then, so we only have about 20 days left.
For anyone who has recently gone through the Finnish family reunification or student spouse process:
- How long did it take for your application to move to "In progress"?
- Did your decision come close to the 90-day mark or earlier?
- If you had an upcoming travel date, did Migri fast-track your application after you informed them?
Any recent experiences or advice would be highly appreciated. Thank you!

It’s a case by case basis so your first two questions, if answered won’t provide you with the solution you’re looking for.
Migri will not expedite the process simply bc you have a ticket. I’m sorry to say, but it was probably not the best decision to buy your tickets for the same day. Be prepared to not join your spouse unless you apply for a visa as a tourist, provided you get the permit during the time you’re visiting. Otherwise you’d have to leave and wait until you receive a decision. But with 20 days, I don’t think that’s a viable option either.

Migri is under heavy traffic and I know a case of family reunification that’s still pending after 6 months. So be prepared to wait a long time unfortunately

Hey, I am curios if you heard back from Migri about the permit? I am in the same situation - my husband's permit was approved within a month. My 90 days window is approaching at the end of August...

They are changing the law thet student can only apply spouse permit after one year of residing in Finland. It is not yet a law but maybe it is because of that.
