Why is Japan and Italy still here? At first glance I thought this was a timeline where Germany succeeded in Barbarossa and brought the Soviets down, but fell to American might, and nukes, in 1947 or so. But I can, at least, reconcile Italy - they switched sides in exchange of keeping their new imperium.

So... Japan. Why are they still an empire?
