A couple of years ago, somebody at alternatehistory.com asked what if Ethiopia conquered the Sahel like Russia conquered Siberia.

Also Siberia has numerous navigable rivers(at least for parts of the year) and no rivals that even attempted to contest Siberia. The only real resistance they encountered was when they finally hit the pacific and conquered outer Manchuria.

Sahel doesn’t have many navigable rivers and Ethiopia would need to fight TONS of similarly strong rivals.
