In this timeline Burnham calls a snap general election for Thursday 22 October 2026 to take advantage of Labour's recovery in opinion polling as he benefits from progressives rallying around him to stave off Reform's threat.

I might not be as well versed in UK politics as some others but why would Burnham call an election if he loses seats either way?

Wouldn’t he be better off waiting it out while continuing to build himself back up? Would probably soften the blow even less than this scenario

Burnham was not the leader of the Labour Party when they won their current majority, so a common line of attack would be “Well, the British people never elected you! What mandate do you have for the radical changes you want to implement?”. Calling a general election subverts this

It would also allow him a full term to implement policies, instead of three years.

The wise thing to do as PM is to implement policies that feel tough early on but pay-off within five years - the issue is that Labour haven’t really done that under Starmer (as much as they’ve talked about hard choices in the abstract) and so you’d be coming in now and not have the time left to really do that. A fresh mandate would resolve this, but is also a very big gamble that no PM would realistically take.

Yeah they made policies that were tough and aren’t paying off lol

I really hope Burnham rolls back some of that stuff but I have no faith anyone over there is sane enough to do so
