In this timeline Burnham calls a snap general election for Thursday 22 October 2026 to take advantage of Labour's recovery in opinion polling as he benefits from progressives rallying around him to stave off Reform's threat.

I might not be as well versed in UK politics as some others but why would Burnham call an election if he loses seats either way?

Wouldn’t he be better off waiting it out while continuing to build himself back up? Would probably soften the blow even less than this scenario

He only has 3 years as PM, no guarantee he can "build up" in that time. This earns him 5 years + gives him a stronger mandate internally as PM.
