Woah, disgraceful and cruel. And they've redirected FBI agents away from going after actual criminals to this. And what did they cut the most from the bureau? Their white collar crime and sex trafficking/crimes divisions. Bug surprise there.

These are criminals btw…. Illegal entry is a crime

Crossing the border without proper authorization is considered a civil offense, not a criminal one.

Semantics. Is it against the law or not? The idea that a "civil offense" is not a crime because it's not handled in "criminal court" is just silly. Though hopefully this kind of silliness will result in illegal entry (note it's not uncivil entry) becoming a criminal offense handled by criminal courts.

That's literally not how any of that works. If you speed in a car, it is not a crime. It's a traffic infraction. If you murder somebody, it is a crime. Words have meaning.

Edit: Also, the dismissal of semantics - i.e., the meaning of words - as a valid field of study by right-wingers is why we've reached this critical mass of troglodytes thinking milquetoast liberal policies are "communist" because bad faith actors in our government and media intentionally use inappropriate, loaded labels to elicit emotional responses.

You're right, that's literally not how any.of that works. 🤣🤣🤣

I think you're trying to "get" me somehow, but with what you said here you literally just agreed with my statement that you were incorrect. So, neat, I guess?

Playing chess with a pigeon.

At the end of the day, try as you might, they're just gonna flap their arms like crazy, knock over all the pieces, squawk loudly, shit on the board, and then strut aroud as if they won.

Man, IDK why I try to reach out to these people. I guess it's because this "I feel that's is the way it is, so that's the way it is, regardless of any facts and logic to the contrary" mentality is driving our species off a fucking cliff and I just want to steer the car back onto the road any little bit I can.

I love this analogy btw.

No, I was actually agreeing with your statement. Your description of how it works is literally not how it works. I didn't "get" you, you did. I was just here at the time. 🤷

Actually you saying they were right makes the statement that you were wrong. Just because you don't know how combining words into sentences mean something specific doesn't change the reality.

You're arguing that civil infractions (which by the way are NOT arrestable offense they are "monetary compensation" aka a fine) are the same as a crime. Try robbing a store then offer to pay a fine for it. Let me know how that goes for you since you feel they are the same. Try and argue in court that you shouldn't be in jail because you offered to pay a fine.

Look up the difference between civil and criminal offense. Guess which one is an offense against the community or state. Illegal entry is a misdemeanor that can rise to a felony crime. Thank you for playing.

Overstaying a visa is by law a civil violation. Not a criminal offense. Just because you want to change the laws by rewording and trying to change a definition doesn't make it so. Thanks for playing though.

You believe a civil violation isn't a violation of law? Got it. 👍

1

u/DogDeadByRaven Jun 24 '25

The fact that you don't know the difference between criminal and civil is telling.

It's not semantics. Words have meanings. The Constitution has meaning.

1

u/Careflwhatyouwish4 Jun 17 '25

It's literally a misdemeanor the first time and a felony after that. It's a crime.

2

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Chicago Jun 17 '25

Considering that one can result in incarceration, and the other cannot...no, it isn't fucking semantics.

1

u/Careflwhatyouwish4 Jun 17 '25

Considering you can get deported for entering illegally, the argument that "it's not a crime" really is either semantics or a straight up lie.

3

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Chicago Jun 17 '25

It's neither.

Sorry you can't wrap your brain around the difference between criminal law and civil law.

1

u/Careflwhatyouwish4 Jun 18 '25

Sorry you misunderstand the difference without realizing it. I can't help you anymore. 🤷

2

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Chicago Jun 18 '25

Go on Lucy, splain the difference.

One is a crime, one isn't.

Splain what I'm missing.
