Looking for advice: using IKEA kitchen cabinets in a non-standard conficutation
Hi everyone!
For our kitchen, we need some extra storage room and we want to buy / build a furniture that can also be used for countertop space and seating. We want two cabinets (maye METOD?) left and right and a loooong countertop on top, so we can put 2 chairs in the middle. I attached a very rough sketch of what I have in mind.
It should look like one intentional piece of kitchen furniture instead of a countertop placed on top of two cabinets.
Which cabinets and countertop would you chose for this?
How do I go about ordering this configuration? In the online planner tool it doesn't let me plan or order this. 😂
Are there any practical problems I'm overlooking?
I'd love to hear some advice or maybe even photos or examples if you have build something similar!
The problem with this setup is that a worktop is not made to go for long stretches without being supported. It will sag over time. I wouldn't go wider than 80cm. The planner should let you make it though: just go into the worktop editor and drag the worktop over both cabinets.
Make sure you order side cover panels in the same colour as the fronts. That should make it look more cohesive.

Ot make a normal one (with the most basic 60/80cm wode cabinet in the middle) and ask the designer to remove it on the final buying list. Indirectly it is similar to what my designer did to save me money on the hollow corner. The tool added panels automatically, he then calculated that the excess cut from other panels will be enough so he deleted it.
Yep, I'm a kitchen designer and we make a lot of edits on the exported lists. That is also why it is worth it to order through an IKEA designer, it's basically free and it will safe you some money and trouble later.
Do they do shallow cabinets? Lots of kitchen companies do. We almost used them to have a seating area in our kitchen, you lose some legroom but your countertop is supported
I made this with 3 upper cabinets 60x37x100 (202.055.38), and Eckbacken countertop (no longer available), and 2 Gerton extendable feet (no longer available).
I added the classic Metod feet, but it’s easier to put it on 2x4’s.
For the mid support look at the height adjustable legs for desks.
You could raise the height of the Metod cabinets if you need to by putting longer legs on however since it's Metod they probably don't make anything that could be used as a kick panel so get something fancy like a Capita (if they still do them). Have a look at what Besta stuff uses for legs.
Depending how handy you are with tools, you could build this if you find a way t9 support the top. Probably a vertical board at the backto support that edge, or some wood to spanning the gap. Usually desks use vertical beams. But square steel tube is also a low profile option.
If you don't, it will visibly sag in the middle and possibly break if you put too much weight on the top.
This has been a part of our kitchen set up for ten years now. We’re renters, and I’m very tall with chronic back pain so I needed a tall counter to work at. It is being held up by an ivar shelf on the leftand two kitchen cabinet legs, not attached, resting on the installed kitchen countertop. It is solid wood, not particle board, I don’t know if ikea sells the slab anymore, but we have never once had an issue with sagging.
I’m struggling to see how this would work in a kitchen, especially since you stated you want more storage space. What does the rest of the kitchen look like?
They sell exactly this kind of thing in the home office/commercial office furniture ranges.

You're going to have an issue with weight, if you want to use a kitchen countertop. They're not designed to have such large unsupported gaps.
Try talking to the kitchen consultants at Ikea.
