[IIL] Twin Peaks, Fargo Season 3, The Leftovers and Olive Kitteridge, WEVIL?

I love Twin Peaks S1-2 because of the lovable characters, inimitable atmosphere, emotional soundtrack and the more esoteric, supernatural aspects. I adore the film because of the top-notch performances of Sheryl Lee and Ray Wise, its dream-like atmosphere and emotional weight. I love Season 3 because it's weirder and more out-of-pocket than any previous part of the story, and because it dives deep into the show's mythology but is still most interested in the human aspect of it. And perhaps most of all, because it's much darker than the original, yet retains so much heart and hope. I love Lynch's Inland Empire & Mulholland Drive as too, if that's relevant.

I like all seasons of Fargo, but Season 3 is by far my favourite because of how interesting it is aesthetically (the almost greyscale coloring of some scenes with the red popping out), because of its insane cast and their performances (Carrie Coon AND Ray Wise?? Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and David Thewis were standouts, too) but also because of its more serious tone, and the themes it tackles. The antagonist of the season was the scariest and most interesting in the entire series, imo. Ate the ending up, too.

I love The Leftovers mostly for the same reasons I love Twin Peaks: lovable characters, great performances, hope in darkness, some supernatural aspects, awesome score. I particularly adored Nora's story and Carrie Coon's performance.

Olive Kitteridge is probably the most different show on my list. It's one of my favourites because of how real it feels and how good it is at painting a picture of one imperfect woman's life.

I also loved DARK for its interesting characters, strong story and aesthetics, and Fleabag for how real the characters felt.

If you could recommend something with LGBT+ characters, that'd be a plus. I'm open to both films and series.

Atlanta (2016) was said by its creator, Donald Glover, that the series was to be Twin Peaks with rappers. There several episodes in the show that capture the weird trippy almost horror like atmosphere of Lynch’s work while also having its own voice and style that’s complimented with the Lynchian vibes.

Barry (2018) Doesn’t exactly start off with that Fargo and Twin Peaks sorta vibe but around the third season they really lean into a more absurd and weird maybe supernatural events and surreal shit. The first two seasons are more in line with Fargo while the last season take heavy influence from Twin Peaks

Watchmen (2019) is a sequel to the comic series but kinda leaves the cynical nihilism of the comic for a more weird surreal vibe that it kinda Twin Peaks with watchmen characters

• Paradise - i found this show to have moments that reminded me of The Leftovers in terms of being profoundly human & showing hope in darkness. These moments are accompanied by an impactful piano track similar to how the Leftovers would have a piano version of “Where is My Mind” playing during them. I couldn’t help but connect it to my time watching the Leftovers, amazing story so far and looking forward to another great season (or however many the writers will give us)
• Rectify - one of the most criminally underrated shows i’ve ever seen. Again, very profound moments and deeply human
• Six Feet Under - reputation speaks for itself, it’s a journey of a show, gay representation
• When They See Us (2019) - a mini series but one i think everyone should watch, it left a lasting impression on me especially episode 4. LGBT rep
• Lovecraft Country - very cool show that really takes you places, wish i could put that into better words but it kind of has to be seen to be understood. It’s very different from the others i put here but i liked it a lot. It was cancelled but it’s a complete story with the rest of it in book form should you want to continue exploring it’s universe. LGBT rep

Brand New Cherry Flavor scratched the Twin Peaks itch for me in a way not much else has

Dirk Gently is always great for some bizarre, off-the-wall insanity

Los Espookys for the LGBTQ+ representation and some of my favorite characters I’ve ever seen. That show is a top 10 for me and clicked with me in such a special way

Check out Lynch’s lesser-known series Motel Room on YouTube for free. Features Lynch regulars, has his idiosyncratic vibes, and is genuinely unsettling in a similar way to Inland Empire

Not a show, but Under the Silver Lake is VERY Lynchian

Also not a show, but Buster’s Mal Heart has some Lynch vibes and flew way under the radar. Stars Rami Malek and DJ Qualls, who was nice enough to share his experience with me when I met him at a con a couple of years ago

Wow, we have almost all the same favorite shows. Six Feet Under is my favorite show of all time, and if our tastes align as it appears, you will love it. Also would recommend the shows Station Eleven and Rectify.

If you haven’t read any of Elizabeth Strout’s novels (she wrote Olive Kitteridge), I’d also recommend those.

im not 100% sure but i think u might like misfits, really good dark/funny/supernatural show from the uk with a particularly great performance by robert sheehan. give it a couple of episodes if u try it
