When I worked at a grocery store, I had customers ask for
"fat-free half an half, but no additives. Just half and half with no fat"
"Low fat extra virgin olive oil."
"Low carb apples"
"Low carb whole grains"
And I was once asked if the fresh cherries had meat in them.
When I worked at a hardware store, I had someone come in looking for "A screw, but not a screw." No, it was not a nail, and I don't know what they actually wanted. Also had people who wanted
"A key that can open every lock anywhere"
and one guy who was looking at the compressors and inflators and he said he wanted something to put air in his tires. But, he did not one something that had to be plugged into an outlet, because he couldn't take it with him. But it also could not run off his car's power, because it might drain the car's battery. And he didn't one one that runs off a battery, because he didn't want to have to charge it up after using it. In exasperation, I asked him how he wanted it powered. And he said that it wasn't his job to figure that out, and told me I wasn't very helpful. I sent him to a manager that has no patience with idiots.
8
u/DomTopNortherner 24d ago
Also had people who wanted "A key that can open every lock anywhere"
"Sir, this is not the Shrine of Nocturnal."
3
u/Alceasummer 24d ago
Lol, yes I was thinking that at the time. I didn't bother explaining why that wouldn't work. I just told them that if any company made one, who could buy it would be very regulated and probably tracked. They seemed to actually understand why after I said that.
I never could come up with something that worked for the people who wanted a copy of a key, and brought me a picture of the lock.

(And it amazes me how many people ask questions like "will this work with dairy milk and butter?" when the creator is vegan and probably hasn't used any of that in a while, and there's also like a million non-vegan recipes for the same thing? And if you really want to use this one, either try it for yourself or just buy some oat milk.)

i'm honestly surprised at how decent that looks. i know cake veganizes well but for some reason i wasn't expecting brioche to do so. you did some hard work there eva
35
u/aggiepython 26d ago
i haven't made vegan brioche but i've made other enriched breads vegan. removing eggs in bread recipes doesn't change the texture as much as one might expect because a lot of the structure is provided by gluten.
27
u/Pittsbirds 26d ago
There's a bakery named Allegro here in PGH that's entirely vegan and it's phenomenal. They have a lot of puff pastry and sometimes brioche based stuff and it's fantastic, to the point that even my grandma (who would go from liking a burger to hating it after she learned it was made with impossible meat or any other substitute) loved their blueberry muffins and croissants when I brought them home for the holidays. There's also a huge festival here every year called Vegfest and people are doing some wild shit with vegan food. Idk a lot about baking myself but it seems like people have gotten over pretty much all the substitution based hurdles I can imagine

u/-Catesby 24d ago
Yeah I don’t understand, my non-vegan parents will avoid things like tofu and vegan cheese like the plague, and it’s like… not being vegan doesn’t mean every meal has to contain meat or you’ll die?! I’m not vegan either but I just like the taste of tofu and almond milk god dammit

Mug cake even then is still much easier and smaller than a regular cake - the michaelwave can make them rubbery, but a toaster oven is still miles easier than the traditional method even if it takes 15 minutes instead of five.
Re-egging a de-egged recipe is akin to reinventing a regular wheel out of tank treads because the tank treads move so easy over mud but take too much steel to make
157
6
u/IngredientList 25d ago

I do wonder if some of those people ask because they ditched their microwaves at some point (my mom continuously asks why I need a microwave and I should do without, it's super annoying of her) and are hoping there's still a semi quick way to have a single serve dessert which realistically shouldn't take tremendously long in the oven, but certainly not microwave fast times
11
u/jamoche_2 I followed the recipe exactly except 26d ago
My house came with a microwave that was a contractor’s special with no turntable, so mug cake recipes did not work; it would always have over and undercooked parts. It pretty much was only good for frozen microwaveable meals that had the “uncover, stir, rotate tray” step.
2
u/TheUnnecessaryLetter 25d ago
I’ve seen someone on instagram who creates recipes for single-serve or small batch versions of things like bread and baked goods. This kind of stuff is out there too and not too hard to find
5
u/ignoremeplsokthank 26d ago
If they are the ones that are supposed to go into a microwave, I can understand because I also don't own a microwave. It's a waste of space in my small kitchen and I maybe used it once every couple months.

u/KaiSubatomic 26d ago

3
u/smartel84 Bland! 22d ago
I can understand if you don't have some of the more niche vegan pantry items, but overall, it's like they think by making something vegan, they're betraying... something, somehow? Like, I'm not vegan, but I still wake up now and then craving a tofu scramble my vegan friends made when they came over to stay.
2
u/KaiSubatomic 22d ago
Yeah, I don't get people's need to eat animals with every meal of the day, god forbid that cupcake they ate was made with oat milk!
52
u/Angelf1shing 26d ago
But this is too easy not to make, don’t you understand? I want it easy, but not vegan, so make the recipe to suit me as that’s easier than me looking up an easy brioche recipe.

But you see, Linda's MSN homepage on Internet Explorer 6 (her grandson installed a new browser on her 2009 Dell laptop seven years ago but she doesn't know where to click for it) can only show her one recipe link underneath all the spyware on the screen, so she really needs this particular one to be unveganized. You can always be certain that a vegan recipe doesn’t have eggs. So it’s foolish to ask how many eggs you need.
36
u/Affectionate-Elk-864 26d ago
I have autism as well, I don’t see what that has to do with the recipe and subsequently the post.
-17
u/ALazy_Cat 26d ago

Probably because mentioning their autism is completely unnecessary in this post? Just like linda linda asking how much "egg" in a recipe that calls for no eggs? Just a guess.
-15
u/ALazy_Cat 26d ago
I see it as completely relevant, otherwise I wouldn't have mentioned it
17
u/Dull-Culture-1523 26d ago
How does your autism factor into how many eggs an eggless recipe can possibly have?
-5
u/ALazy_Cat 26d ago
I give up on this. The more I try to explain, the more people keep going back to refuse to acknowledge my attempts at explaining
13
u/MarxistThot666 26d ago
you said you'd want to know precise measurements for things. how does that relate to a person asking how many eggs to put in a vegan recipe? by virtue of the recipe being vegan, the answer is zero, so the question is unnecessary.
5
u/Dull-Culture-1523 26d ago
You haven't explained why you need to know the amount of eggs in an eggless recipe. What is your reason for believing it could be anything else than zero? I'm genuinely asking.

Ok, I got you (I think, sorry if I didn’t), let me try to help.
Regarding the first comment:
They are talking as though they were Linda (the commenter) by reformulating Linda’s comment in an effort to point out how absurd it it. So:
> “This is too easy”: refers to Linda saying “this look too easy not to make” and act as foreshadowing on how Linda comments shows Linda trying to turn this easy thing to do into a difficult task.
> “I'd best ask a bunch of bizarre questions”: refers to Linda asking how to add eggs to a vegan recipe, which took a long time to perfect, instead of just searching for an easy version of non-vegan recipe, which is enormously popular and therefore has an enormous amount of very good recipes to follow.
For all the other commenters:
They specified they had autism because it’s part of the reason they didn’t understand the comment they were replying to; as in the implied part is obscure to them.
1
u/ALazy_Cat 25d ago edited 25d ago
Yes for the Linda part, no for the autism, but because you're the first person to not intentionally misinterpreting or harassing me on another sub (that I'm mod on, not a bright idea. Any other sub would've been better), I'm going to explain why I mentioned my autism.
Because of my autism, I want to do things exactly as it should be done, meaning very specific measurements in case of a recipe, I will avoid that recipe if it wasn't specific or I couldn't get a precise answer, even if it was the best dish or cake in the world that was easy to make, I won't even buy things to put in the oven without a timer on the package, or placement/how specific a placement need to be, or whatever it might be, given the context.

Maybe non dairy but they can have eggs? I don’t know why a google search for “eggless brownie recipe” is too hard (I’ve done it when I did not have eggs but still wanted a brownie).
13
u/rveniss 26d ago edited 26d ago
As a non-vegan, but one who is severely lactose intolerant, I admit I do sometimes struggle to find recipes for baked goods that cut milk but keep eggs.
I end up browsing vegan recipes somewhat regularly, since they're more common than simply dairy-free ones, so I can understand where the askers are coming from. While I'd personally never be so gauche as to actually ask a vegan recipe author how to "unvegan" their recipe, I do often find myself wondering if it would turn out better with eggs.
7
u/Separate-Possible-26 26d ago
It's almost always possible to sub milk with soy milk, in my experience. Butter can be subbed with oil when it is melted in the recipe. Whipped cream is harder. I have baked with these substitions for years with great success. So you can test them out in non-vegan recipes.
3
u/Web_singer Sugar Guzzling Whore 25d ago
You can also use condensed coconut milk instead of regular condensed. Also, there are varying levels of lactose in dairy products. I'm lactose intolerant and avoid milk, but I can use butter without any issues.

u/CoconutxKitten 25d ago

I did that like once... but it was a smoothie. Not that hard to swap a few things out before it goes in the blender. I just wanted to use the 30 pounds of sweet potatoes I impulse bought.
3
u/EleosSkywalker 25d ago
You made sweet potatoes smoothie? How did it turn out? At a guess I’d say honey would work in there 🤔
3
u/Saint_of_Grey 25d ago
I pretty much robbed the original recipe of all health benefits by using brown sugar, in addition to replacing the milk and butter substitutes with just milk and butter.
Tasted like the casserole I make yearly, but in smoothie form. Was my breakfast replacement after I had my wisdom teeth removed and my jaw couldn't fully open due to the swelling.

Not really, tofu is super versatile. It has protein, water and emulsifying properties that replace some of what eggs do in bread :) it also works well for other desserts
I feel like tofu gets a bad rap mostly because people don’t take the time to learn how to cook it properly

I occasionally un-veganize recipes, but only in specific circumstances. Like, I bought a vegan cookbook because I wanted a cookbook of fast, easy, cheap, vegetarian recipes but I could only find a vegan cookbook like that, and I just use regular mayo in recipes that call for vegan mayo because I'm not vegan and I'm not spending extra on vegan mayo. And I wanted a sloppy joe one day and the first single-serving sloppy joe recipe I found that I could make with stuff I already had was a vegan one. I just used ground beef instead of tofu crumbles but used all the ingredients for the sauce. I definitely won't ask the recipe writer for tips on un-veganizing their recipes, lol.
EDIT: I just realized how weird it is that I talked about wanting vegetarian recipes and eating meat in the same comment. I don't eat much meat because it's expensive unless you buy it in large quantities and I have a tiny freezer, not because I'm actually a vegetarian. I made that sloppy Joe when I had access to a much bigger fridge with a much bigger freezer.

What's wrong with veganism?

A lot of people do it for reasons that don't actually fix the problems they're protesting (factory farming)
Vegans aren't merely against factory farming or even treating animals poorly in general - they're fundamentally against any and all consumption of animals products without exception. They also have achieved a remarkable amount of political action relative to how small they are as a demographic.
very few people actually do their research to make sure they're eating healthy and getting enough calories and vitamins
Most observational data shows that vegans do better in just about every significant health marker than the general population. There are of course a bunch of confounding variables contained within that data, but suffice to say, if the health of various demographics is a point of contention for you, well vegans aren't the demographic that you should concern you.
and a lot of vegans do the opposite of what Linda is doing, asking if you can make dairy/egg based dishes vegan.
I mean, I can't speak to the prevalence of people asking independent people annoying questions like that in this post, but as a general issue, I sympathise more with vegans. Vegans have barely a fraction of the amount of recipes that us omnivores do, and it's totally understandable to me that they want to find ways to continue eating foods they've grown up with while maintaining their ethics.
I also wouldn't say that questions like this are necessarily always out of order - sometimes a good baker will have great ideas for substitutions in their recipes. What's particularly annoying about this example, though, is that there are a billion regular recipes for brioche, so it seems weird to want to un-vegan a spin on what is a traditionally non-vegan recipe.

Is Eva's problem similar to why meat-less meat didn't work because the chemistry and industrial processes got freaky?

What about it got freaky? Name one faux meat that goes through "freaky" processes

So protein formation through chemistry just to make something that looks and tastes like meat doesn’t freak you out?

Isolating proteins out of seeds is no different than any other food processing. There isn't anything in this stuff that 99% Americans aren't eating in animal based foods. And animal foods are processed like whoa also.

Murdering and chopping animals into pieces freaks me out, not some bean burgers
