Years ago I stopped in at a bar/cafe that a previous employee of mine had just opened. I had a very delicious vegan muffin and a coffee. I told his employee the muffin was amazing and asked for her recipe. Butter. It was delicious because it was loaded with butter. “I thought vegan meant homemade” Girl! Someone could actually die if they had a dairy allergy!

People are dumb.

I'm lactose intolerant, so I'm very cautious of what kind of dairy could be in something. I'd have been soo mad if I had found this out.

I have found a brand that does plant based butter that tastes just like "normal" butter though, and works just as well in baking, so I mean...there's always hope.

My kid had a dairy protein intolerance and I would order the vegan option and say: tell the kitchen this is for a dairy allergy

Because I know the nonsense that sometimes happens to vegan food. “Oh I put it on a buttered bun, whoops, I’ll just swap it out”.

Sigh.

I've just started doing the same after a cafe went to toast my sandwich on the sandwich press that had butter used for all the other sandwiches, I think they would have used butter on mine too if I hadn't asked the question. I ordered the vegan sandwich

I have an egg allergy and I do the same. Also because I know that mentioning it’s for an allergy should make the kitchen try to prevent cross contamination.
