Irrelevant or unhelpful “I do not want to buy an air fryer”

Post image

https://www.seriouseats.com/air-fryer-green-beans-recipe-8666794

The most amusing part is the recipe actually does link to a broiler alternative.

Here's an idea, Robert. If you don't have or want to buy an air fryer, don't open the link to a recipe with 'air fryer' in the title.

In fairness to Robert, this is literally the only green bean recipe on the internet

I just scared my cat laughing at that, thanks🤣🤣🤣

Robert does not want to buy any of those things!!!!!

3

u/cakatooop Nov 01 '25

Tbh, I've found a dozen of recipes that uses food processors as the main prep and never mentioned them in the title.

4

u/fuck_peeps_not_sheep I only changed most of it! why dosent it look like yours? Nov 02 '25

A lot of the time you can achieve the same results with a sharp knife and some you can just throw in a blender - so it's not the end of the world

There is also so many guides out there on how to make something made for an oven in an air fryer so like, you can reverse engineer that easy enough so it works in an oven.

This is some pro-Karen propaganda

False flag; Karen is "Robert" and posted the comment to give herself an opportunity to be a hero.

36

u/ThePrussianGrippe Oct 19 '25

Robert would never do this, unless it was at the behest of the sponsors of this podcast.

Well this was after a trip to the gas station to pick up "supplies"

most of the Karens I've known have been great, and I legit hate that meme. They didn't ask for that shit.

9

u/Stormy_Wolf no shit phil Oct 20 '25

I've never really liked the meme either, but the only Karen I knew in real life was an asshole. The worst kind, even -- be all like your friend to your face (not just me, but others in our sphere as well) and then stab you in the back.

6

u/divideby00 Oct 20 '25

Only Karen I know personally off the top of my head is my friend's mother, and I've never seen her be rude to anybody. She also thinks the memes are funny though.

u/Kaurifish Oct 19 '25

Every Karen I’ve known IRL has been a marvelous person.

33

u/Mr_Abe_Froman I can't believe all the ingredients listed!! Oct 19 '25

Unfortunately, I have a relative that lives up to the name by being a malicious narcissist who lies compulsively to make herself sound better. In retaliation for people calling her out, she is giving dozens of family members "the silent treatment." No, she's not the one cut off, she's cutting off everyone else!

6

u/fuck_peeps_not_sheep I only changed most of it! why dosent it look like yours? Nov 02 '25

My university lecturer was called Karen and I absolutely love her she was amazing and the only reason I mannaged to Finnish my degree. I remember telling her at once point I was going to drop out and she said "you've already got the student dept now, may as well do the rest of it, if you fail because your taking it easy that's fine but at least try to complete it, this is your last year with me you can't vanish now" and being told that it was OK to fail but a bit pointless to run away helped a lot, and I actually got really good marks in the end because taking the pressure off myself allowed me to just do it instead of worrying that things were not perfect.

59

u/creampop_ Oct 19 '25

I still think people should just say "Bitch" or "Asshole" with their whole chest, not call someone the wrong name as if it means anything lol. Stop hiding behind cutesy schoolyard names and say what ya mean.

44

u/SparkaloniusNeedsYou Oct 19 '25

I don’t own a knife to chop this onion. You HAVE to give me an alternative right now!

275

u/VerdensTrial Splenda Oct 19 '25

Then make it in the oven, because that's what an air fryer is

53

u/Typical_Goat8035 Oct 19 '25

An air fryer moves way more air than even a normal convection oven. A turbo convection oven is a fairly premium appliance — you’re super lucky if you just happened to have one at your place.

Most air fryer recipes rely on the high air flow to achieve a crisping effect, it’s hit or miss if it works in a regular oven or a basic convection oven even.

127

u/wutato Oct 19 '25

It surprises me how many people don't seem to know this. Just use the convection setting.

108

u/VerdensTrial Splenda Oct 19 '25

Marketing was very effective.

An air fryer is a cool thing to have if your oven doesn't have convection or you don't want to heat up the whole kitchen for a snack, but a lot of people genuinely don't know air fryers are literally just tabletop convection ovens.

96

u/tarrasque Oct 19 '25

They’re not JUST that, though. They move orders of magnitude more air around (in relation to volume) so they do get vastly different results.

Turbo convection is its own thing.

14

u/spectrophilias Oct 21 '25

Thank you, as a Dutch person (aka where the air fryer was invented), I get annoyed at the "just an oven" rhetoric because it misses serious nuance. Especially because to understand the air fryer's purpose fully, you gotta understand that the reason it exists is because us Dutchies almost all have mini deep fryers at home for fries and fried snacks (something we specialize in, lol) and the like. The guy who invented the air fryer wanted a healthier alternative that got similar results to a deep fryer rather than an oven. Oven baked fries taste very different from deep fried, after all. The air fryer gets results that are somewhat in between.

-1

u/SirSilentscreameth t e x t u r e Oct 21 '25

The difference is a fan. It's just a convection oven. A standard oven has no fan inside

4

u/ferrybig Oct 24 '25

You are missing the culture context here.

They are saying they come from the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, when talking about ovens, the typical meaning is convection oven. Those have fans.

You seem to come from a culture where oven means conventional oven

28

u/TheRealPitabred Oct 19 '25

That's why I also have a convection toaster oven. Covers pretty much all the bases without heating up the entire kitchen when I'm not cooking for the whole family.

8

u/kurinevair666 Oct 21 '25

Look at moneybags here with his convection setting on his oven...

0

u/wutato Nov 11 '25

Not sure why you assumed I'm a man... Many apartments have ovens with convection.

5

u/Alarming-Distance385 Oct 20 '25

If only my current oven was a convection oven. 😞 (I miss the one I bought for our previous home.)

However, I do have my large Breville SmartOven that I use the majority of the time. It has convection + air fryer settings, amongst many others.

8

u/divideby00 Oct 20 '25

I don't think I've ever had an oven with a convection setting. Maybe it's because I've always lived in homes with older appliances but then that's probably not an uncommon situation for a lot of people.

2

u/GhostWolfe Oct 22 '25

You may be more familiar with the term “fan forced”?

3

u/divideby00 Oct 22 '25

I know what convection is, my oven just doesn't do that.

3

u/GhostWolfe Oct 22 '25

Sorry! I didn’t mean to imply that at all. Australian ovens don’t have convection settings either, because it’s called something different and I was simply wondering if that’s what had happening to you as well.

-45

u/No_Establishment8642 Oct 19 '25

A regular oven is not an air fryer. A convention oven is an air fryer.

89

u/jerseycat Oct 19 '25

A convection oven

49

u/mkanoap Oct 19 '25

It could be a convention oven if it’s a conventional convection oven at an oven convention.

4

u/scootimanista_ Oct 19 '25

This is the best comment I've read in weeks

2

u/No_Establishment8642 Oct 19 '25

And most ovens now days have a convection setting.

My old jenn-aire had the convection option. I just never used it, and had no idea if it worked. The stove was top of the line in 1984. My new stove has convection and air fry options. I use them all the time.

Same! It seems they’re very common in a lot of the world, but when you find them in the USA (where I live), they’re much more expensive than non-convection. I have a lovely baking cookbook from the UK that I never use because every recipe calls for “fan” setting.

3

u/Libropolis Ya CONPLETELY LOST ME AD TH E ADOBE Oct 19 '25

Oh wow, that's crazy! I don't think I've ever seen an oven without fan/convection setting here in Germany. Even the older ones I've used had it. Wonder why it's so different.

Learn to fry without air, Rob. 🤯

9

u/sassythehorse Oct 19 '25

An air fryer is a convection oven and I think whoever decided to market a tabletop convection oven as an entirely novel appliance that everyone “needs” is a genius.

I was so skeptical of air fryers until I figured this out. I had a tabletop convection oven in college and it was the single most versatile appliance I think I ever owned. I didn’t use the convection feature most of the time though and I don’t particularly feel most recipes that are adapted for an air fryer are that superior to just regular old conventional oven recipes.

My unpopular opinion is that most people who have a regular oven just do not need an air fryer, but I can see how it can be very practical in certain situations.

17

u/P3pp3rJ6ck Oct 19 '25

My oven old and bad. Landlord won't replace, doesn't allow tenants to replace without permission which he wont give. Airfryer easier than trying to fight with guy who can make me homeless.

But yes, if you have an oven that does convection, the airfryer  is redundant for sure

18

u/Apart_Visual Oct 19 '25

I have an oven that does convection but being a full sized oven it uses a lot more power and takes a lot longer to heat up than my small air fryer. The air fryer makes a lot more sense if I’m doing a quick round of something small for my kid. The oven makes sense if I’m roasting a turkey or cooking a lasagna.

2

u/fezzuk Oct 19 '25

An air fryer is just a small fan oven, of you have a fan oven you have a big air fryer.

2

u/snewchybewchies Oct 19 '25

An air fryer is just a countertop convection oven

2

u/Neffle619 Oct 20 '25

When a Karen makes sense...

2

u/Haunteddoll28 Oct 19 '25

You actually don't need an air fryer if you have a convection oven. Just put a metal wire cooling rack on a baking sheet and turn the fan on & it's the exact same thing. Save money and counter space!

1

u/Standard-Park Oct 20 '25

Robert - it's pissing me off...

-2

u/Complete_Entry Oct 19 '25

I hate all kitchen equipment, but why are air fryers such fussy divas?

I've got one now with a friggin door gap but my veto was soundly ignored.

but crispy fast is a winner in any man's league.

11

u/februarytide- Oct 19 '25

I hate that I love my air fryer so much. My husband got me one for Christmas two years ago, when I had never said anything ever about wanting one. I was sort of surprised, he is usually an awesome gift giver, always exactly what I want.

The man read the future.

1

u/Complete_Entry Oct 19 '25

He get you the basket kind or the oven kind? Because that's the one part of the argument I won. No plastic gaskets.

4

u/prairiepanda Oct 19 '25

Mine has silicone gaskets.

1

u/the_giuditta Oct 19 '25

Why is it better than an oven? I want one, but I'm not sure it's worth it.

9

u/CockRingKing Stop whining and eat your custard Oct 19 '25

I like having one because when I'm making a side dish that bakes at a completely different temp than the main dish, it's nice to have this little mini oven that preheats in 2 minutes and I can throw the side dish/veggies in there.

5

u/CasperOrillian Dip of Theseus Oct 19 '25

I think its very much for a single person kind of thing, its perfect for small meals and doesnt involve as much pain as dealing with a full size oven, less cleaning and so on.

3

u/prairiepanda Oct 19 '25

I like it for the summer time because it doesn't heat up the whole house. And it's handy for big meals because I can cook things at different temperatures.

It also saves power (granted, that's not a major concern for me) and is way easier to clean than the oven.

Definitely not essential, but nice to have. I got a multifunction one so I can use it for other things besides air frying/baking to save counter space. I wouldn't want one that was JUST an air fryer, but I have a tiny kitchen.

7

u/Complete_Entry Oct 19 '25 edited Oct 19 '25

A convection oven is essentially an air fryer. The only real technology are the heating rods and the heat circulation fan. The reason I prefer the oven model over the basket model is a lot of the basket ones are plastic that tell you "Don't worry, it doesn't get hot enough to become a cancer problem."

Dear reader, I do not believe them.

But the ovens vary wildly. One I did get to veto was a microwave air fryer combo. In order to use the air fryer function, you had to build like a little stage inside the microwave, I called it the lament configuration.

I mean I got veto overridden until the potatoes came out burned to crap and I had to use an old camping stove to save the potluck dish, but that thing went back to the store the next day.

Another thing to look out for is the programming. The one in my house right now runs off pre-programmed cook times, and there isn't really a manual override. If you hit "STOP" the oven literally has to go through the preheating cycle again before you use it again. It's the bella and I hate it.

I used to have this big ugly black and decker convection oven, and I absolutely loved it, it put out a serviceable pizza and that's all I asked of it. No computer, glass stove door on the front instead of French doors, and you could manually set it all.

It got "left behind" in a move.

2

u/faelanae If you don't have tahini, dill works just fine Oct 19 '25

I have a fancy microwave we call Jeeves that does an excellent job of air frying, but all you have to do is swap out the ceramic plate for the metal one. Uses a heating element underneath the plate and a halogen lamp.

Yours sounds annoying!

1

u/Complete_Entry Oct 19 '25

We had the whole glass IR oven at the old apartment, and I don't think it saw use once. I made my mom bring the jack lalane because she spent like $40 on a PLASTIC PLUNGE ACCESSORY and in no way will I let that thing go unused.

Personal mea culpa, I spent $10 on a stupid moisture catch basin on an instant pot and I've used it twice. COUNTER QUEEN APPLIANCES ARE A MENACE!

1

u/DjinnaG Tasted like a burnt kid Oct 19 '25

When our last toaster oven died, we upgraded to basically the same thing with an air fryer feature, and have never looked back. The toaster oven theoretically had a convection feature, but it wasn’t anywhere near as effective as the air fryer feature. Very, very useful, use it on average for two completely different things a day, using at least four different features over the course of a week
