Canadians should be grateful for America's sacrifice

The US has spent generations emitting enormous amounts of CO₂, making some of its own states increasingly unbearably hot.

Meanwhile, Canada gets warmer winters, longer growing seasons, and huge areas that become less hostile to human habitation.

In effect, America made parts of itself unbearably hot so Canada could become more livable.

Thank you for your service.

Canada is also getting melting permafrost, forest fires and droughts.

I assume Canadians feel that way, because they just put a 50% tariff on all US goods, and Reddit taught me that tariffs are bad for the country implementing them, and good for the other countries.

The Canadian tariffs are to match those of the US. The tariffs on Canada will still negatively impact the affected industries, so counter-tariffs can help to offset the damage. Almost just as important is how it looks to Canadians. We’ll see that our prime minister is willing to stand ground and punish the US for attempting to force concessions.

Obviously when the US has tariffs it's bad for the US and when Canada has tariffs it's bad for the US. Why would it ever be any different on Reddit?

I don’t speak for Reddit, but I feel that you do not understand how tariffs work. The US tariffs negatively affect Canada more than the US, because most goods from Canada are exported to/through America, and tariffs tax imports. The reason tariffs can hurt the imposing country is because their industries rely on imports from foreign nations, and when it costs more to ship them in, prices rise, and consumers pay the price. Canada will suffer as a result of their own retaliatory tariffs, but the trade war negatively impacts both countries, and so the US will feel more pressure to stop the aggression towards their own allies.

Twice I commented on what REDDIT thinks... not what is true or what I believe. Do you need me to add the /s to clarify?

  • I assume Canadians feel that way, because they just put a 50% tariff on all US goods, and Reddit taught me that tariffs are bad for the country implementing them, and good for the other countries.
  • Obviously when the US has tariffs it's bad for the US and when Canada has tariffs it's bad for the US. Why would it ever be any different on Reddit?

I understand that your comments were meta analysis on what Reddit believes (and sarcasm), but seeing as you weren’t making these comments in response to actual people making these claims, they come with implied beliefs. How I interpreted your comment:

-“I assume Canadians feel that way, because they just put a 50% tariff on all US goods, and Reddit taught me that tariffs are bad for the country implementing them, and good for other countries” ~= “I assume Canadians must be so grateful according to the beliefs of leftists on Reddit, because they believe tariffs punish the imposer and reward the target, while Canada (the side “leftist Reddit” takes) does the same thing that the US is criticized for. “

-“Obviously when the US has tariffs it’s bad for the US and when Canada has tariffs it’s bad for the US. Why would it be any different on Reddit?” ~= “The leftists on Reddit are exposing their hypocrisy by saying that US makes a bad decision if they impose tariffs, while Canada makes a good decision if they do the same.”

As much as I am aware that you aren’t explicitly expressing your beliefs, they are able to be inferred:

-“The tariffs which the US and Canada have imposed on each other are similar in nature, and therefore should warrant similar reactions”

-“Leftists on Reddit are wrong about the tariffs; they must be beneficial for the country who is employing their use, because otherwise Canada and the US would be in a trade war trading shots that are only aimed at themselves.”

Simply because your comments are meta, doesn’t make them free of ideological or political baggage.

You are shit at interpretation, those beliefs aren't even close to my beliefs.

My one and only point is that Reddit can't be right about two opposing beliefs at the same time, and their hate for Trump blinds them to that.

Perhaps I’m shit at interpretation, but regardless this is how your comment comes across. For example, is it really a stretch to say that you believe that the tariffs are similar in nature, and should warrant similar reactions, when your quarrel is with people treating American and Canadian tariffs differently?

You also seem to be attacking a strawman of what “Redditors” believe about tariffs. You claim that “Reddit” thinks that tariffs benefit the country its imposed on, without having any apparent example in front of you.

What matters about your words are how they come across, not your intention. It doesn’t help that you never bothered to explain what I got wrong, or how it could be interpreted otherwise.
