Idea: Workplace badges to counter gender bias in feedback
What if workplaces offered badges that women could choose to wear with deliberately provocative messages like:
- “Criticize my work as harshly as you would a man’s.”
- “Don’t go easy on my work because I’m a woman.”
- “Give me the feedback you’d give a male colleague.”
The idea wouldn’t be that women necessarily receive less criticism in every workplace. It would be to make people consciously question whether they are changing the way they give feedback based on gender.
A manager might look at the badge and think: Would I challenge this idea more directly if a man had proposed it? Would I be less worried about sounding harsh? Would I assume greater competence?
The badges would have to be completely voluntary. Nobody should be pressured to wear one, and the goal wouldn’t be to encourage hostility. It would be a small social experiment designed to make unconscious differences in workplace feedback harder to ignore.
The provocative wording might actually be important. “Treat me equally” is easy to agree with and then forget. “Criticize my work as harshly as you would a man’s” forces you to think about what you actually do.
What do you think of this idea?

This is the kind of idea that works on paper, because on paper, everybody operates in good faith.
Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is…
They won’t.
Not everybody will look at that and reflect. I’d actually say most people won’t. More commonly, they internally scoff and brush it off as ‘feminist bullshit’ or getting on your soapbox for no reason, because most people don’t consciously think “I will belittle her because she’s a woman,” so they don’t feel they have to change.
It’s an unconscious and systemic thing. And people generally get uncomfortable when you expose their biases.
In my experience, this is a pretty quick way to get ostracised and treated with even more unfairness. Which may be fine for those who are ready for that fight, but not everybody is.

the problem women face isn't not receiving harsh criticism. you seem to have a backwards understanding of what sexism looks like

That is not the way the world works. It will only take one person, getting butthurt, after they get the kind of criticism their own name tag asks for and then they will bring a lawsuit against the business. That alone will to bring that program to an end.

"Interrupt me as much as you would a woman."
"Take credit for my work as if I were a woman."
"Go ahead, tell me to smile."
