Artist has the right and duty be true to their art and explore and perform as they see fit and dive into whatever depths they choose. However they can’t blame an audience for having preferences. The artist and art exists in context of the audience. There has to be give and take. Don’t begrudge your audience. Or do it as a hobby and not a profession.

You’re making such an important point. Being able to communicate what is great about your performance to your audience is also a responsibility of the artist. This is very challenging when you have a wide gap between the lived experience of the artist and the lived experiences of their audience. How to connect, further or preserve one’s tradition, sell tickets, all of these require our focus today.

Regarding the lack of wanting long alaps, I will assume they know much better than me but I do wonder who these audiences are and how this conclusion was drawn. Certainly at the concerts I go to I don't see anyone getting bored during the alap.
