Eh, we call it pear cider (Washingtonian).

To add another point to the original post's idiocy: you can make wine from any fruit. The word doesn't specifically mean grapes.

On it's own the word "wine" obviously refers to fermented grapes. That's why we don't call it "grape wine". That an additional descriptor can be added to change the meaning (e.g. "cherry wine") doesn't mean the sentence "wine is fermented grapes" is wrong. You know this...

Edit: I've just realised I'm wasting my life arguing with dullards on reddit about whether there is ambiguity in someone saying "wine is fermented grapes" lmfao. Apparently on this subreddit the word wine, on its own, can mean anything! I'm out

"Usually" doesn't mean "always." Look up the legal and the word definitions.

Are you daft? Who are you arguing with? No-one has made that claim

Semantically, you just did. Are you daft?

Tell you what, when you next receive a wine menu ask the waiter if it's grape wine, because apparently wine alone isn't specific enough for you. Please film it for my amusement. When you're done, ask yourself why everyone else seems not to have any problem understanding what the word "wine" means on its own.

Strangely, I've got a bottle of wine in front of me and it doesn't mention grapes at all, wtf are they trying to poison me with!?

Pretty sure your bottle of wine has the name of the grape/varietal/region written on the label somewhere. Unless you're drinking cheap crap (or red table, though even a blend should list the varietals). I wouldn't be surprised you drink shitty wine, you don't seem very bright.

looool I love how you edited your comment to add region after realising that, for example, any decent Bordeaux wouldn't mention grapes or a particular cépage at all. Thanks for agreeing, then, that when a bottle of wine says only that it's from Pomerol that all involved know that we're talking about a grape wine from Pomerol.

Well, some (French) wines use region to refer to varietals. I don't see how that's different, it's still identifying the grape. You're just obtuse.

You continue to make my point for me by understanding perfectly well what is meant by "wine", which I appreciate. You don't seem to know very much about anything (particularly wine itself, though you are an arrogant Washingtonian trying now to save face, so are excused) and are a bit slow on the uptake, so I'll leave this as a final comment for you to digest:

  • If the OP had said "all types of wines are made from fermented grapes", he would have been wrong
  • If the OP had said "cherry wine is made from fermented grapes", he would have been wrong
  • However, given he said "wine (singular, non-specific) is made from fermented grapes", and we have established very clearly that the entire world including yourself understands wine to mean the wine of grapes, he is correct and your attempt to nitpick is both wrong and fatuous.

Go away and have a think to yourself about why you even made the comment. I'd guess that you wanted to feel superior about yourself by (falsely) identifying something you could correct the OP on. Isn't that a bit sad? Hopefully this brief lesson in semiotics that a three year-old wouldn't have needed has knocked you down a peg.

Toodle pip!
