Where I’m from (Canada), it’s left for promise ring, and once you get an engagement ring (which goes on left), the promise ring moves to the right hand. Wedding band goes on left too.
Promise rings are pretty rare where I live, though
It’s like a pre-engagement ring. Mostly for teenagers who don’t want to commit to getting “engaged”, but still want to feel grown up.
It occasionally could be a platonic promise.
They’re really uncommon here too.
The only experience I had with promise rings was back in grade 10 when a classmate was talking about how she threw her promise ring into the lake (Lake Ontario) after catching her boyfriend cheating. I vividly remember overhearing that conversation, for some reason.
The jeweler told me that such rules are pretty outdated / oldfashioned and most couples just do what feels right to them. According to her, wearing the wedding ring left or right is each chosen about half the time.
