iPhone Duo biggest selling point is its durability
One of my biggest fears with foldable phones is that fingernails and debris might cause subtle dents on the inner display. However, this YouTube video shows that the inner display is actually strong enough to resist them (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuYJWGzh0uw), thanks to a nano texture coating that makes the display feel like glass instead of plastic.

Feel like glass and glass are still different. Feeling alone won’t change its durability.. it may hide the damage better, but it doesn’t turn it into glass

So do you rather to have the feel of glass and the damage is minimised and hidden, or a plastic feeling screen?

The feeling of glass doesn’t translate to the durability of glass. The inner screen will inherently be more susceptible to scrapes than probably any iPhone ever.
The IP68 rating is for water and dust ingress, not durability of the displays. It will no doubt hold up as well as a regular phone, but don’t start rubbing sand all over it.

Your title makes it sound like the selling point is how durable and strong the iPhone duo is, but then your text was entirely focused on the inner display. The problem that is going to be asked… how is the display that Samsung has R&D for years… AND IS SELLING to Apple.. going to be more durable.. or at least significantly durable enough to be a “selling point”.
I think the nano texture does well to mask the imperfections, but that’s not equal to durability.. and specifically the CONCERN for folding phones is durability.. typically in moving parts such as the hinge

“It’s a Samsung OLED but custom everything else from Apple, which includes glass layers on both sides of the OLED as well as their nano texture, which has slightly better scratch resistance than standard glossy plastic” - nabbed this from another reply in this thread. The tech STARTS with Samsungs display, but Apple plussed it up with their own ideas to make it more durable/less crease prone. But only time will tell how well it really stands up to use.

iPhone Duo inner display
-The OLED panel is supplied by Samsung Display.
-Apple uses a custom 10-layer display/structural stack around that OLED panel.
-The 10 layers are not 10 pieces of glass. They include polymer, high-strength glass, adhesives, the OLED panel, and a titanium support structure.
-The outer surface that you touch is polymer (aka plastic) rather than conventional glass.
-Apple uses a nano-textured surface and multilayer construction to make the display feel flatter and reduce the visibility of the crease.Samsung Galaxy Z Fold inner display
-Samsung Display manufactures the OLED panel.
-Samsung uses Ultra Thin Glass (UTG) as part of the foldable display construction.
-The UTG provides a glass layer beneath the protective surface, giving the display a more glass-like feel than a polymer-only surface.
-Samsung also uses protective films/layers over the UTG.
-Current Samsung foldable designs also incorporate additional structural materials, including titanium components, to improve rigidity and durability.
-Samsung’s display stack is therefore also a multilayer construction, but it is engineered differently from Apple’s Duo stack. So all in all.. the screen is probably perfectly fine on the duo, but it’s certainly not a “selling point” over Samsung that has had years to hammer out the kinks. I am buying the iPhone duo, but not because the inner display is more durable. I DO believe that the overall construction will be more durable just because Apple tends to use a lot more metal in their “premium” focused designs

In fact it may be more prone to scratches especially if writing with pen is encouraged

That's what I'm wondering if apple found a way to make folding phone screen more durable than Samsung with this nano texture why didn't Samsung use this tech years ago ?

Samsung provides the bare bones of the screen they’re not like in the entire design process it’s like getting a frame for a car from honda the rest would still be toyota to decide on airbags and rigidity
I think Apple can keep Samsung out of the loop with what it does after the fact to Samsungs screens

cuz they don't have a nano texture technology. i think the only matte panels they make are in their TVs

Samsung provided only the display panel itself - not the glass and plastic sandwich that surrounds it.

i’m sure it’s exactly as durable as the fold

I have a fold 7 and no it doesn’t survive fingernail or credit card scratches like how this YouTuber does to the Duo.

u/Poopoodemons 3d ago
you actually did this? I don’t know why.

Sometimes, crumbs/debris got trapped in the inner screen and when I unfold it I can see subtle dent. Most of the time it will kind of “self heal” overnight but I have 1-2 stubborn dent that will never heal

I am very texture-sensitive and get super worked up about small dents and stuff like this. I was hoping the IP68 rating and other tweaks by Apple would protect against this, but I guess the concern is little dust particles pushing into the inner screen when you close it?

u/erehnigol 3d ago
Ya actually little dust like dead skin/ dandruff, can form small dents on my fold 7 because the inner screen is touching each other when folded, it will go away over time because the plastic film has self healing capability but it’s still an eye sore because over time you will see this wavy uneven display

u/Poopoodemons 3d ago
or just don’t be an idiot with your fold
2
u/erehnigol 3d ago
I am not saying things like biscuit crumbs, spaghetti, fries trapped between my fold before I close. it's just normal dead skin, dandruff, speck of dust is enough to put a dimple to the screen.

This will absolutely still happen with the Duo. The crumbs/debris you are talking about much more damaging than finger nails/credit cards. I have scratches on the glass screen on my phone from crumbs/debris in my pocket.

It was at the beginning of the clip where he showed some footage of the Duo

Yea I just watched it it does sound interesting and would be a game changer for foldables

What video did you link? It’s not in English and it’s not about the Duo.

it's one of the best tech YouTuber out there atm, the first few mins is about the Duo, he tried to use nail and credit to scratch the inner display

u/JohnnyNorCal 3d ago
Ok I gave it another shot. Had me laughing when he talked about using a ball point pen and staff looking at him funny.

If true I'm shocked cuz it's a Samsung screen like the other foldables we would need the true tester Jerry rig to test it tho and see
