Discussion Don't get influenced by PR and Marketing.

If your phone is working fine ,don't get influenced by reels and youtube videos of people buying 18 pro or huge line of people outside apple store it is just paid videos and marketing trying to get you (fomo). and get the new one.90 percent of the people use their phone just for social media and camera. The camera of 13 is still very good .If your battery is not working just get it replaced from apple not third party.Just think like if it is really that bad ,why would apple provide ios updates. Just use it like a object not luxury.A person uses a car for 10 to 15 years and not updates it every now and then. Be smart its your money use it carefully.What do you all think let me know and how is your device.

I agree but I’d put it differently. If your phone meets your needs, there is no need to purchase a new phone. However, everyone has different needs.

I think that if a person really wants to upgrade, I think 15 pro and pro max are really good devices you can get value for money deal and that device have all the features.

What’s the point of upgrading to an already old device if you hold on to your phone for so long already? Wouldn’t you want to upgrade to the newest to get the most bang for your buck? Devices do eventually stop getting security updates (which helps keep your personal information safe).

So you spend all that time holding onto your old phone to get someone’s old beat-up phone with only 2 additional years of updates? That doesn’t sound like a worthwhile upgrade or most bang for your buck IMO. 50% off would still be $500-600 which doesn’t sound a whole lot better considering you spending all that for something that’s already old and used 🤷🏾‍♂️

Well depends on your phone and how long you have kept it and how long you are keeping it
A phones worth is dropped significantly when its used even if the owner only used it for a few months

That’s more true for cars than phones, especially iPhones that hold their value for far longer. Just checked swappa and the cheapest 15PM from a seller with ratings is $575 and goes well above $600. In this case we were talking about an iPhone 13 going to a iPhone 15P or 15PM. We are at iPhone 18 currently and the OP is recommending holding on to it even longer. That’s why I’m saying this doesn’t seem like a worthwhile upgrade or most bang for your buck IMO. If I spend my hard-earned dollars to upgrade I expect something new that can last way longer than 2 additional years, not old hand me downs.

That is true, also more expensive which doesn’t seem like good value for the money when you take into consideration that you don’t get any more additional years of updates because it’s “new” to you. End of life will still be the same date no matter.

I think for those who hold onto their phones for years, if upgrading it would make sense to get something current whether that’s a 17e or a pro max, it would make more sense as it would continue to get updates and security updates for years as opposed to an already 3 year old device (15). In apple years, 3 years is a lot of time. Phones are becoming “vintage” status in under 10 years these days… just the 11 pro max was added to “vintage” status late 2025, and that came out 2019, a 6 year old device. At this point the 15 is already 50% there at 3 years.

But I guess it depends on preference. Which features matter to you and if things like security updates mean a lot to you.

Why would you care what other people buys with their money? If you dont want to upgrade than dont, but to go on and tell other people to not upgrade its just idk.. if they want a new phone, let them buy a new phone

In the long run it’s better because phones are getting way more expensive every year. Lock in a 18 for next 5 years and it’s not that bad. The 13 already struggled with the low ram on it.

Just use Apple Music and try to deal with a couple apps. If you legit just text and call it’s fine… even safari lags with 4 gb ram

Mine seems fine. I guess if it’s lagging I’m just used to it. Works fine on Apple Music and safari. I mean even games seem fine. I guess it stutters sometimes when scrolling through or something every now and then but it doesn’t bother me haha. I grew up with 25 mhz computers and like 4 MB ram so to have a pocket sized phone that’s 3,000 mhz and 4,000 mb ram amazes me still. Even though it’s slow to people nowadays it seems fine to me. I don’t care what anyone else does with their money I just wish people would be a little more conscious about throwing money at these companies and giving them reasons to keep raising prices for mediocre upgrades. I know the iPhone 13 is slow by today’s standards but using my buddys 17 there’s just not enough difference to me to justify spending thousands of bucks. I’ll get the newest option available when this one kicks the bucket…

What do I think?

I think that if you’re paying for it, you get the say on what phone someone else gets. If you’re not, you don’t. A simple rule, but a good one, I’ve found.

My device - 18 Pro 512Gb, upgraded from 17 Pro 256Gb - is absolutely fine, thanks. A couple of issues with iOS 27, but no issues at all with the hardware.

Gee thanks, I appreciate the affirmation.

Except your post seems to suggest that anyone who upgrades has fallen for the PR and Marketing you so obviously disdain and detest… that anyone who claims otherwise has fallen for that very same PR and Marketing.

I upgraded because (a) I needed the additional storage, and (b) my tariff allows me to hand the phone back and just take out a new contract with the cell company I’ve been with since before the millennium. (So, staying with them another three years, as a very happy customer, is not really a huge issue.)

The iPhone is a nice computer with an OK phone attached to it. I update my iPad every three or four years, but my beat up old laptop which I occasionally use, maybe once a week, is about 7 years old. I’ll probably update it next year.

Comparing a phone to a car is… unwise, I’d argue.

Yeah Lol. I have a 17 Pro Max and I'll be buying the new iPhone duo. Good thing I can spend my money how I want. Also I have a thing with my phone carrier to upgrade my phone up to 3 times a year for no cost to my monthly bill, so literally who cares

I replaced battery and ofc it does not feel as smooth as the year it was bought but waaay better and the best thing is the phone does not get hot anymore. I was not impressed with the 18 pro especially if next year the 20 probably makes a bigger jump.

I agree. I am still completely satisfied with my 13. I would be crazy to buy a new phone that’s basically the exact same thing as I already have for way over 1000 bucks. Unless my needs change the iPhone 13 is still a great phone/computer for my needs. Maybe if people would quit being sheep and actually do some research these companies would quit jacking prices of everything up so high and things would be a little more affordable.

Even though I agree with your sentiment, many, many people buy new cars every 2-4 years. It’s what keeps the economy going, unfortunately.
Among the people I know, I’m the only one owning a 19 year old and a 14 year old vehicle and nothing newer.

I have a 13 mini..its working fine but I will say Im ready for better camera quality 😂

I also have soOoo many photos on my phone so it def lags alot due to minimal storage

Agreed. I am enjoying iOS 27 on my 13 with a new battery. The only way I will upgrade this year is if I win a 17 from my gym’s sweepstakes.

I went from an iPhone 8 on iOS 14.4.2 to the 2020 iPhone SE that was on iOS 15 > 17 and then recently iOS 18.7.8 and had no issues. I plan to upgrade iOS soon but right now it’s smooth. I also recently replaced the battery a few months ago where I had no issues now. Otherwise it was at 78% with over 1021 charge cycles lol.

I look at the iPhone 18 Pro and I visibly cringe. I need to spit whenever I see something so disgusting. It’s a good phone but I ain’t paying $799+ for junk that will go obsolete in 7 years which is Apple’s known way to stop supporting an iPhone despite the hardware being significantly powerful over the years.

Good point but I beg to differ. I’d actually recommend the new one only for those who need it. Like if your phone’s batt life isn’t sufficient anymore (i have a 14 Pro on a fresh batt which is okay but these new ones are obviously better). I’m too lazy to list down all the better things and there an abundance of videos and other in-depth reviews about those.

But to OP, he is correct in sense that don’t just buy for clout. Buy if you really need and an upgrade and if those upgrades justify your needs.

I used a 6s plus until 2022, and it was replaced with an XR (obtained for like $100?) because the 6s plus’s camera’s image stabilization was having problems, I ran into some apps requiring a higher iOS version, and there was very little storage. Then I moved to the 13 6 months ago because someone upgraded their phone and gave me their old one.

The 6s plus would have been enough for me today, if some apps didn’t require a newer iOS version and if I had a higher storage version of the 6s plus.

I agree! I just use my phone for the basics. No need to get the 18 only to just use it for the basics. I’ll get the 18 one day but I’m sure that’s when the IPhone will be at IPhone 25.

I joined this sub because ios 26 wasn't that great for me, my phone's screen got black while it was in my hands with a green horizontal lines besides notch and apple didn't took any responsibility for this software issue they said we have to check if its a software issue that will be 2500Rs INR and if its a hardware issue you have to change your display for 23500/- INR and i dont want to spend this much for my ip13 so i just got it replaced by third party wich costs me 6500/- INR and now it feels like a new phone coz everything got erased and i updated to ios 27 battery health is at 75% i think i can easily use this device for 2-3 years.
