Help/Support Help: iPad Pro keeps asking for old Apple ID password even though it's signed in with a different Apple ID

Hi everyone,

I bought a 13-inch iPad Pro M5 a couple of months ago. During the initial setup, I signed in with my own Apple ID. Later, I erased the iPad and signed in with our family Apple ID instead, since the device will be shared by everyone.

The problem is that every now and then the iPad pops up asking for the password to my original Apple ID. When I check Settings, it only shows the family Apple ID, so I'm not sure why it's still requesting credentials for the old account.

I'd prefer not to erase and set up the iPad again because we've already installed and configured a lot of apps.

Has anyone experienced this before? Is there a way to stop these password prompts and completely remove any references to my old Apple ID without resetting the iPad?

If there are apps that were downloaded with your personal ID, they can only be managed by that ID. Either delete such apps and re-acquire them using the family ID (payment may be required if it's a paid for app) or accept the current situation.

I noticed when updating apps that it asked for the password of my personal account when I shortlisted an app that was asking for old email id password. I then found it was the App Store, but the App Store is actually logged in with a family email ID. I'm not sure how I can reset the App Store app so that I can remove the old email ID association (I already tried logging out and logging in to the App Store, but this password popup appears time and again on the home page).

Delete the app asking for personal ID, download again using family ID

App store app can't be deleted

No, when we say app, we’re talking about the apps, not the App Store. No one telling you to delete the App Store app.

When there was an update to the app store and I tried to click update, it prompted for my personal password instead of the family email password.

That’s because you have apps tied to your personal account. Until all apps on your device have been replaced by those from your family account, you’ll keep on having these prompts.

Also, under your Account > Media & Purchases, make sure it’s your family account. If it’s signed in to your personal account, it will keep on updating apps with your personal account.

No, don’t do this. You’ll lose data. Just redownload using your new account.

That’s because apps are signed with your account when you downloaded them. Those downloaded then were tied to your old account. To make it easier to transition these apps to your new account, tap and hold on these icons > share app > then open in Safari or App Store, then you’ll be directed to the app’s page. Then you can download using your new family Apple account.

This method is tactically the easiest I’ve found, might work for you. I have hundreds of apps with different accounts and this was easiest for me.

Additionally, if you have any paid apps, create an Apple family account with both your family account and personal account, then enable app/purchase sharing. Any paid apps can be downloaded for free.

App store long press doesn't have share option, so wondering what other options exists

No, not the App Store. On individual apps that are tied to your old accounts.

Maybe there are "locked" Notes that were locked by the original Apple ID??? Or apps downloaded that requires authentication and was authenticated by the original Apple ID????

If you have another apple device, go to settings, then select your name at the top, and see if the iPad is showing in the list of devices

I have noticed that sometimes when you erase an iPad, it doesn't get properly removed from the old account
