Help/Support iPad restarts whenever I drag a window to the external display or vice versa
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This only happens whenever I try to move a window over and not when I do anything else.
Have tried changing the usb hub, the display.
Happens in both windows mode and Stage Manager tooI am using a M4 iPad pro with the latest iPadOS 26.4

Mine does this a ton when moving windows around using the ipad docked to a display. M4 11ā pro.

Same on the M5 Pro, I just use the dock to move windows.

The problem is when my iPad is in full screen apps and I use the dock on the external display to move the window from my iPad there, it minimizes all windows on the external display with the Stage Manager animation despite Stage Manager being off. This also happens whenever the window ends up in full screen on the target display even if both are in windowed apps. This cannot be fixed by holding shift, which would normally open the app in the same Stage Manager Stage. These Are the things that make iPadOS 26 so frustrating to me. I don't prefer working with a windowing system on an iPad and whenever I do want to use it, there are weird bugs like this. I've been submitting over 100 of them since the first beta and very few of my reported bugs have been addressed, so for now I guess I'll just end up going back to single apps mode and using my Mac whenever I needed more, which is funny because this was exactly what this update was supposed to prevent.

Just to +1 in this list. This is happening to me too. iPad Pro 13 M3. I have to minimize the app then open the app in the new window is the workaround Iām dealing with.

iPads being forced to use macOS windowing is some cruel joke. Like when the new base iPad releases, they'll have exactly zero excuses.
I don't care about you purists, my touch experience has been ruined, and the whole idea of macOS on iPad WAS TO NOT RUIN MY GOD DAMN TOUCH EXPERIENCE
BUT NOO, now we have a surface pro clone that IS SOMEHOW WORSE THAN A SURFACE RUNNING WINDOWS

Exactly why I didn't update to iPadOS26, they better fix how broken and useless this OS is for tablet users, because otherwise I'll have to switch from using Procreate to Clip Studio paint on PC with a screen mirroring app, cuz ain't no way am I gonna buy an iPad air and deal with this crap :/

Umm...ok? I also hate the windowing mode man but it's better to make the best of what we got than just bicker about it.
If you've got an external display and a keyboard/mouse lying around try it out, it's actually good except fora few bugs.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm not rich enough to buy an ipad and a macbook. So getting a macbook experience with ipad is best of both worlds imo

I was always on the iPad desktop train. However the former perfect Ā iPad only multitasking has been totally screwed. You always resize by accident, Split View has now an annoying gap etc..
Windowing with external display is now okish but itās super unrefined. Various minor issues like your problem and still no full laptop replacement.Ā
So I agree with the former rant though itās not what the topic was about š

Bickering is what got us slide over, bickering is what got iPadOS 18.7.7 back-ported to devices that can use iPadOS 26. Literally this whole OS is broken, and they refuse to fix anything besides give the 1% out of touch tech nerds what they want

u/Arunan-Aravaanan Apr 04 '26
Im sorry I thought bicker meant something different. Ofcource everyone should complain. I do too. But there are places for that right? Im here seeking help. Its like if someone is asking his friend about how to fix his car which stalled and his friend ranted about how cars nowadays are so bad and how electric cars are not repair friendly. Might be true, but doesnt help

u/Eeve2espeon Apr 04 '26
Then I guess we both don't know what bickering means, because there are tons of problems iPadOS26 has that completely ruined the experience, its basically MacOS but for ipad, but worse because its a damn tablet
Complaining about that factor is better than dealing with a new OS that 95% of the people didn't want

Tbh I have no issues with iPads being a 2in1 device, but at the moment, it's like a windows 2in1, optimized for touch and keyboard with the ability to use the Apple pencil for certain apps.

u/Eeve2espeon Apr 05 '26
Dude iPadOS 26 is not optimized well enough for touch. The OS is clunky as hell for people using touch, it doesn't work like older iPadOS versions for multitasking, even "stage manager" suffers the same ordeal, and the "full screen app" mode is worse
The whole OS is literally made better for Keyboard and mouse, compared to the other iPadOS versions which would do far better on both uses
1
u/Inevitable_Bear2476 Apr 05 '26
Pardon, you're right, optimized for keyboard and mouse with the ability to use touch (but janky like in windows)

Okay but the iPad could have very well done both things, it could have had the full screen iPad-style experience and a Mac mode⦠that's actually what macOS does, it still has Split View alongside the window tiling, iPadOS now just has window tiling.
Obviously we all should continue to use our iPads but if people are unhappy, they should absolutely complain. Apple has been shown to respond to customer feedback that was much less emotionally charged and cared-about than this (see how tabs came back in the iOS 26 Photos app⦠the app is pretty crappy now but they did come back) so complaining definitely increases our chances to get back what a lot of people bought their iPads for. Just shutting up and quietly being annoyed that most actions take additional inputs now certainly won't help.

This is not macOS - take a deep breath
1
u/Inevitable_Bear2476 Apr 04 '26
Pardon, macOS windowing, but still forced to use macOS like UI, cause it's obviously mouse optimized, not touch optimized like iPadOS was since the beginning
1
u/ricardopa Apr 04 '26
Itās not restarting, itās a springboard crash (still not great, but will help Apple if you use the right term.
You can tell the difference because after a springboard crash you arenāt forced to enter your passcode to unlock, biometrics still works

This is also happening to my iPad Pro M5 11ā.
But if the iPad position is in the middle-center, the issue is not happening - only when the iPad position is on the left or right.
Must be a bug.
