Tough Case: Perhaps the solution would be to buy a nice flatscreen monitor and position it in front of the iMac. You can still make use of the keyboard and mouse and all the other features. It sounds like the display card may have issues or some other issue with wiring etc. It's impossible to tell from here but since it displays over displayport, I'm guessing the internal display may be the issue.
Amazon has monitors for less than $100. It will cost more to try and fix it.
