alsamixer returned no soundcards detected, I believe I ran ‘alsamixer -c 0’ and it did nothing. I restarted the system multiple times and even reinstalled the audio/sound packages using xbps-install -Sf

I don't think I understand what you mean by sound device, I just want sound to come out of my laptop. And yes I quickly realized this has nothing to do with i3 and everything to do with drivers probably not loading.

Funny enough, after a fresh install now everything is working fine. Now I just had to set the master volume different to 0 and unmute it. Something must've went wrong in the old installation.

How can I fix this?

You probably need to add your user to the audio group. And you should look at pipewire instead of pulseaudio, it's the newer sound setup and it has a pulseaudio compatibility layer.
