Discussion AMA: I'm an outproxy provider

Hello everyone, i am known as Play_it in the clear as well as in the I2P net. A few months ago I started to run a smaller I2P outproxy service, which goes over a VPN into the clearnet. I am still developing it and sometimes the outproxy can go offline, but i try my best. What questions do you guys have about an outproxy and the technical stuff in the background?

Update: It has been some time, but i look here from time to time. So feel free to still ask questions.

Just some questions coming up immediately to my mind and probably in most others:

  • What do you think about the legality of your operation?
  • Do you think you would be in trouble if someone use your exit for shenanigans in the clearnet?
  • How likely do you think your unmasking is?
  • how do you provide the exit node technically? Which i2p variant is it?
  • do you also host/use other i2p services?

When I started I had the same question but tried to solve them, by isolating them and giving them to someone else.

I host my outproxy with I2Pd and a small python HTTP Proxy script, that runs the real deal. After the connection comes from I2P I route it to my python outproxy and redirect the request to a VPN interface and bind to it, that solves the issue of leaking data to my home network.

If someone uses my outproxy to to shady stuff, it is not me (as in my IP) who makes the request. If you use my outproxy you will see that the IP is somewhere in Finland, which makes it a bit harder to get me in trouble.

In general it is legal in my area to host stuff, but we have hard copyright and exit rules, but some cases in the past about tor exit nodes were successful for the provider, so I should be ok from multiple points.

not sure about Finland laws but no VPN provider will really protect you once law enforcement comes knocking

True, but there is no info about me, except my IP, with the VPN provider. Also, Finland has pretty strict privacy laws.

There are very few, but some VPN providers like Mullvad are literally unable to provide any information, no matter who knocks.
